So what rides better?

The stock Street Glide 12" shocks or stock length E/Glide shocks
with the 1" lowering blocks?

I've ridden two StreetGlides (demos, new) an 07 & an 09.
Can't say I was impressed with the rear susp. No better than
(if as good as) my Softail. The overall handling
and braking and feel was pretty awesome. Of course the
little deflector thing is useless. Something probl 8" tall with a slight flip
to it would do the trick. Oh and the seat. I'd have to at least put a
RoadGlide seat or something on there.

I recently traded my '04 Wide Glide for a 2010 SG. I'm now wondering why I didn't make the switch long ago. For me, it's the best of both worlds; a touring bike for the long trips yet easy to handle on daily commutes and local back roads. I had the same concerns as the OP before I pulled the trigger but I have been very impressed with how the SG handles the bar hops and around town.

I ride mine to work, 13 miles one way, around town to run errands and all kinds of small trips. I also do quite a few 300 to 500 mile day trips and with some highway pegs and a rider backrest it's awesome on long trips. I think it handles great and is a blast to ride. Now I will openly admit that on a windy south Texas day the batwing fairing catches all the wind. It's the only negative to the bike IMO. I added a 8" recurve LSR windshield and it made a big difference. I'm very happy I chose the SG and would reccomend it to anyone.

If you ride on the highway, you will be shocked at how much more stable the Street Glide is than your old Wide Glide. At 70MPH on the Wide Glide on a breezy day, it was a white knuckle ride. At 80 MPH on the Street Glide on an all out high wind day, its stable as an be with the exception on the little effect on the faring. Highway ride the Street Glide, you will be amazed at the difference between your old Wide Glide and it.

NJ Wideglide, all I can do is tell you what I did and why. The FL series bikes have their place in "touring". When my wife and I rode longer trips and put on miles as a goal for our rides, we rode Roadkings and Electra Glides and loved them. As I became a more mature rider and my riding changed to more of what you are describing, I made a decision to buy a 2011 Heritage Softail. For the type of riding you are doing, this would be my choice. The Heritage is my favorite Harley I have owned for general riding. Fl models were designed for a "type" of riding, and I would estimate that 90% of them are utilized for riding out of the relm of their design.
