Excuse me but there is a big difference between an axle and a spindle !!!
If you had one of each side by side and blinked, you would swear there was only one! Matt and I are British old chap and our Harleys have axles, while yours have spindles, but the part numbers are the same.....

Did I get that the right way around?!
I do understand that there is often different nomenclature between the Brits and the yanks but my reference was to the physical difference between a spindle and an axle. I have just checked the official factory manual for my model Harley and it clearly calls the part that goes between the forks passing through the wheel and it's bearings an axle. Same as you called it. A spindle ,at least as I understand it, is a tapered piece attached to the front of a car between two control arms to allow steering. Am I nuts?
No! I got them the wrong way round above, as we do tend to call the front wheel axle a spindle. The swinging arm (swingarm!) has one as well. We have mudguards not fenders, and panniers not saddle bags, but we will be here all day if we go through the parts book.

No, your not nuts. The point I was trying to make was that no matter Brit or Yank, when I read what the original poster wrote, I understood what he was talking about. So beyond that, why push the issue. This forum is for fixing motorcycles, not grammer.

My original comment was directed to Harleypingman's derogatory statement about Matt's nomenclature terms. Not grammar. His statement was uncalled for.
