Default oil temp gauge

I just installed an oil temp guage on my 03 electra glide. I am wondering if it is readin right however. I rode in to work this mornin, 35 min at about 50 deg F and my oil temp was about 170. I installed the kit with the sensor in the pan not the oil line. Actualy the new kit I got came with the correct bushing to do so and it was all plug and play, no more cutting the connectors off from the air temp guage. Anyhow, does this temp sound right? I plan on checking with a laser thermometer when I get a chance but just thought i'd ask. Thanks

That sounds about right. It takes a while for the oil to warm up. At 50*F my bike will not make it over 180*-185*F.

The conditions you mentioned were not sufficient to achieve normalization, maybe if it was 90F ambient. I wouldn't "validate" the gauge with a laser gun, use another analog thermometer in the fill hole, like a turkey frying thermometer.

I just installed one on my '12. Running 185-190 air temps are in the 60s.

Sounds maye a bit low, but I have the dipstick temp gauge and when I commute to work it is close to that temp too. My commute is shorter, that is why I thought that your temp may show lower since I would expect it to be a bit closer to 200.

Yeah, your good. I installed the temp gauge and a cooler on my 99 Ultra at the same time and was in the same boat your in now. Air temps were cooler and the gauge would barely get up to 170 or so. Thinking something is wrong with the temp gauge or sensor unit and trying laser temps, bypassing sending unit etc. and everything checked out. The 88" T/C runs cooler then the 96" motors. The shorter stroke and richer tune keep them a bit cooler then the newer models. As others have already said, wait until it is 90F outside and see what that gauge will read. It is gonna scare you a bit the first time you get caught in traffic!!!!

How does 250-260 sound for a wake up call!
Riding in NYC traffic during the summer, I see this with my 103.
