Default Carrying fuel?

Do any of you carry an extra gallon of gas with you when you go on long hauls? I've seen some post on siphon tools. I was thinking of putting a gallon in a back pack on and strapping it well to the passenger seat. Of course a good quality container is a must. I didn't want to put it in the side bags figuring the odor can't be contianed.

Thanks,
Joe

I've thought about carrying some extra gas along but have never done it out safety concerns. I'm a map freak so I more or less plan a route with gas stops planned ahead. If I deviate from the planned route, I'll start looking to fill up at the half full mark.

I understand your concern about the possibility of running out of gas and wanting to carry some just in case. On my Harley, it has a 5 gallon tank and I know what the average mpg is so I just watch my trip meter and try to keep it topped off whenever I can. I've never thought about carrying extra gas, but I've seen too many containers that leak a little and I wouldn't want to take that chance, I would rather just plan ahead and make more stops for gas.

I carry a 33 oz. fuel bottle when I'm in the boondocks. It's actually made for carrying fuel for a camp stove. It's small and it'll get me another 10 miles. It's made by MSR, I don't remember where I got it. Google "fuel bottle". It was $12.00 with shipping.

Air-tight seal allows fuel to be stored longer by preventing air from entering and degrading fuel

Made from single-piece, impact-extruded aluminum to prevent leaks and cracks.

Bolstered shoulder and base to resist bulging when pressurized.

Controlled Pouring
Holes in shaft of bottle cap allow measured flow, prevent spills.

Air-Tight Seal
Allows longer-term fuel storage by preventing air from entering and degrading fuel.

Pump Storage
MSR Fuel Pump can be stored inside a depressurized bottle for easy transporting.

Those MSR bottles are desiged to be carried in hikers backpacks. Having 2 myself I can vouch that they will not spill any in your bags. MSR makes good stuff. I use distilled mineral spirits in mine, but alot of hikers use regular gas.

Wow, a good thread here, I just went today at N.A.P.A. and got a 1.24 gallon plastic gas can to carry in my saddle bag.
The first one leaked so they gave me a nother one.
I filled it with gas and turned it upside down and it does NOT leak

So, now I have a "6" gallon bomb[sm=happybounce.gif]
