It is probably a lot cheaper, and easier to get a new boyfriend.

Did i mention, I have two Harleys, that work. lol

I'm guessing that when he assembled it, the oil pump went on almost all the way, then he used the screws on the cam plate to draw it in until it snapped? If that is the case he needs to align the flats on the oil pump in two places and he missed the second one.

So, is the nick on the leading edge of the shaft or further in? The high spots can be knocked down smooth with a die stone or knife sharping stone carefully.
I would not use emery cloth as it will take off more than just the high spots.

additional things to check,
- shaft run out
- cam plate straightness

Consider who the OP is on this thread. I'm surprised there is not a 2 mile long line of certified Harley mechanics waiting for a chance look at that chest....mmmm.....ahhh...cam chest that is!

LOL! Yes, that exactly what happened. He used the screws to draw it in. The nick is on the leading edge not very far down. It's just preventing him from being able to put it back on. I located ANOTHER oil pump so he shall try again tonight. My understanding is he should be able to snap it in by hand before he screws it down? Lord I hope it works this time. $200 a pop for oil pumps is adding up quick!

I'll make sure to show him this message. Thanks!

Exactly My Thoughts Too.
I hope you and Sean are back on the road in no time Heather .
As for the Shade Tree comment I think the guy was attempting to be funny,
not knowing who you two are and the amount of knowledge you two have brought to HD Forum.
Not to mention the entertainment factor either.
Enjoy the Ride,
Rob

Thought so, the reason I'm worried about cam plate straightness is that if he put enough force on it to break the gears, he probably also bent the plate. Might want to start price checking.

I picked up a SE cam plate from Kokomo when I was upgrading my '03 Ultra. There was an Indy at the parts counter picking up some parts also that said the oil pump assembly should almost feel like it "snaps or pops" in and not to use the bolts to seat it.
I had a buddy helping me install my new cams and camplate. He was fighting the cam plate until I remembered what the Indy said. A little wiggling & it (new oil pump) went right in. When it's in right it'll be in place without needing the bolts to pull the cam plate against the block.

Good Luck

Update - So he got the new oil pump installed and everything back together and it went well. He checked the cam plate and it appears to be fine (not bent or cracked). Got the adjustable push rods installed and everything back together. The bike fired up and ran great. Then tick, tick, tick, dead. Got it home after a long ordeal which included pushing a 800lb bike for 2 miles. One of the push rods was lose. So he readjusted them and tried again. Same thing but this time it's a different pushrod. Then same thing agian. The first failures were on the the rear intake..one failure on the front intake, last fail was on rear intake and exhaust. He says he thinks the lifters are not staying charged with oil? And ideas?
