My '09 ultra classic manual says:
"A"
Turn ignition on
Push engine Run/Stop to RUN (Do not start enginge.)
Push Throttle to Roll OFF position and HOLD
Afta abt 3 seconds the cruise cmtrl lamp will flash green (enabled) or repat above and it will flash red (Disengaged)
The above is when the engine is OFF. Well if the eng is OFF then neither cylinder is running. 'dah! EITMS is supposed to shut just the rear cylinder not both.
"B"
On the HD website it says to shut off the rear cylinder, while running but either with clutch in or in neutral roll the throttle OFF max way clockwise AND hit the Cruise button.
Does this all mean if you do "A" alone nothing happens but it gets ready for whenver u do "B" above?
Is the above what is going on? I do not want to experiment with my bike just in case I scerw things up.
Is the above the total story?

You can activate or deactivate the EITMS when bike is in neutral and not in motion or when just ignition switch is set to on and switch set in run..you can't mess anything up..it's either on or off. You don't have to do anything with the cruise button that I know of...just roll throttle CW and green cruise lights up green its on..if it lights up red its off..

Ok, take me from point stupid.
1) I am sitting at a light.
2) I put bike in "N".
2) I roll the throttle CW.
3) Cruise cntrl light shows up blinking green.
4) Rear cylinder shuts dn.
I am ready to do:
1) Bike still in "N"
2) I roll throttle CW
3) Cruise ctrl light flashes red.
4) I am good to go.
Buzz, rolling the throttle forward will not shut off the rear cylinder. It will just activate the system that will determine when temps are high enough to do so.

Thanks for the clarity. I would have been wondering abt it if I did not hear/feel/smell the diff as I understand a rider would. I live and ride most of the time in S. Florida so I suspect I would be up to temp in short order.
You will feel the difference when the EITMS kicks in, it will vibrate a bit more and RPMs will drop slightly. FWIW You do not need to be in neutral to change the settings.
Buzz....leave it so it shows green..and ride like always...
Drive safe..
If itis left so it shows grenn (or rather blinks green....a steady grn means u activated the cruise control) then when u r hot at a light the back cylindar will automatically shut off?
