In 2010 I bought SG had dealer do 103cu and 255 cams kit Felt same way. Heat was unbelieviable. Did a SE Pro Tuner,V&H power duals, high output slip-ons. Don even seem like same bike. Once that cat is gone and tuner is on u will lose a ton of heat.
Thanks for the quick reply. Guess I should have asked this in the first post... Would taking out the cat affect my warranty in any way?
(not trying to hijack your thread Hillbilly, but these issues seem to be relevant to your situation as well).
Ahh now there is the $64,000 question. Technically if your cat-less pipe causes the failure you are looking to have fixed, or if something is up with the pipe itself you could have a problem being covered. The practical answer is that its up to the dealer on how much they are willing to work with you. Some will give you a hard time, others are much more cooperative because they are used to doing these types of upgrades. The best bet is to ask your service guy this question and see how they react.
gut the cat and add xied's to take care of the heat. the stock mufflers are a little bit deeper sounding without the cat. the dealer would have to prove that this is what caused your warranty issue to deny warranty. dealers make a ton of money selling pipes, mufflers, tuners, etc..
buy an '09 take off pipe from your dealer and have him install it with your stock mufflers. order the xied's from nightrider...they are plug and play...you can remove them before you take it in for warranty work, if you are worried.
Easy just get your check book out and buy any number of open pipes. I use the V&H Power duals. There are several threads on how to cut the cat material out of the head pipe complete with pictures. Do a search and you will see several.
It will cool down some when it is broken in and put synthetic engine oil in. You can also get a tuner and cool it down some also. When I first bought my Limited with 103, I remember thinking how hot it was. It was in March and the motor was running very hot. It would go into the killing back cylinder mode ever time you stopped for over a minute. It didn't take long to get to the 1000 mile service and changed to synthetic. It has only gone into the Etms mode only once since then and it was in 95 degree weather sitting in Pigeon Forge traffic last summer.
The dealership told me to run regular oil for the first 6k miles then switch to synthetic.
