I had the Aileron heated grips and didn't really care for them. Kept my palms hot, but fingers still got cold. I'd invest in some heated gloves instead.
I have had HD heated grips on my last three bikes, I love them and wouldn't own a bike without them. I used mine on the way to work this AM, comfy on a setting of 2.
I have the H-D heated grips and I have had no trouble with them. First time for heated grips and all I can say is I wish I had gotten them sooner! I suspect the reliability issues with the H-D heated grips that some have complained about may have something to do with the installation. I had a local Indy install mine and have enjoyed them for two years trouble-free.
H-D for 2 years and they are great. I also use National Cycle's hand guards which keep the wind and rain off my gloves. Therefore.............1) I did not use my Gerbing Heated gloves all winter because the hand guards and H-D grips kept my hands comfortable down to 34F. 2) I wear lighter gloves now as the Hand guards keep the wind off, so more heat is transferred. 3) I have never had to go higher than #2, I cannot imagine riding where I would need heat setting 3, 4, 5 etc...4) Originally I planned to removed the Nation Cycle hand guards during the summer, but now they keep the drying wind off my hands and I can wear really light perforated, fingerless, or no gloves in comfort.
Short answer..I think that Hand Guards and heated grips go together like Hwy Bars and Hwy pegs.
I'll still keep my Gerbing gloves for now as you never know when the situation will change. I keep them in the saddlebag all winter, It is just that with the heated grips, hand guards and Gerbing heater liner and boot soles with Desert Dawg hwy bar vinyl lowers, I am comfortable all day down to 28F. (I don't know how much colder I'd want to ride anyway.
Have HD heated grips on 3 different bikes. 3 years on my Ultra, no problems, 2 years on the wifes SG, 5 years on the old dyna, no problems with any of them.
I know of many bikes up here in Canada with HD heated grips, all work fine. The only problems I have heard of are here on the forums.
