Hi all, I know I dont post that often but I am in need of help. My bike is driving me insane and I can take it anymore...
I have a 04 RK Classic and it has been hicupping and misfiring. The problem is that it is intermittent and I cant pinpoint the problem. It seems to happen more when the air feels thick or muggy, but that is not always the case. It will hicupp or misfire during acceleration and at a constant speed. If I hold the trottle so that I am at a constant speed I can feel the bike "hesitate" and hicupp. I also get a blast of air through the air filter during a misfire and get popping out the exhaust. I am stumped and I dont want to bring it to the dealer and spend alot of money to just replace parts. I seriously need some guidance as I am riding to a bike rally next weekend.
These are the things I have done so far:
1.) changed plugs and wires
2.) cleaned the trottle body and air filter
3.) cleaned all grounds
4.) removed and tested the ignition coil
5.) removed and cleaned the cam sensor and crank sensor
6.) run water remover and fuel injector cleaner in the gas
Bike:
2004 RK Classic
upgrades: Rinehart True dual exhaust
Arlen-Ness Big Sucker intake
DnyoJet power commander
How did the plugs look when you pulled them? Symptoms could be due to running a bit lean. If your plug tip is white then I would suggest adding fuel to your mixture...
Gator252 thanks for the reply. This problem has been happening for awhile and last season I put the bike on the Dyno and had it all adjusted. This problem happened before and after the Dyno adjustment. It used to happen when the bike seemed to get real hot or after a real long ride but now it is getting more persistant.
Next two things I'd check are the fuel line in the tank, & intake leaks around the manifold. Even with a full tank of gas a bad fuel line in the tank will cause a drop in fuel pressure, & an intake leak will cause the exact problem you describe.
But it also happens with a full tank of fuel! Could it be a sensor in the intake?
Most of the time but not always a failed sensor or a sensor that is reading a condition that is outside of normal will set a code. Have you checked them? A fuel line with holes in it will not set a code until it is way worse than your current condition. These will be very small holes and you may not see them without having pressure on the hose. Like Jinks said a full tank doesn't matter as the fuel line is fed by the pump and is pressurized by the pump.
Pressure relief valve in tank, clogged fuel filter. You give it trottle so there is a bunch of air but not enough fuel and you get a cough and intake backfire. Just a thought.
Sticky intake valve? Do a compression check and a leak-down test.
Intermittent injector? You can pull the injectors and have them tested for flow, leak, spray pattern and coil resistance.
