I have the same exact problem. My bike is totally stock. I purchased in sept 2011 from Cali and it was over 95 every day I rode out there no pinging at all, none, nada. Get back here and the pinging starts anytime it's over 80. Took it to the dealer and they told me that it was a problem but hd was not doing anything about it. But for just a measly 2200.00 bucks they could do a stage 1 and it "should" fix it.
I have never put anything but premium fuel in it. So I tried a bottle of octane booster.
Problem solved. I plan to call FM Monday to see if they can help. I don't want to do pipes and such, I'm happy with the way it is except for the pinging and it makes me worry about engine damage.
Mine does the exact same thing. I have done the stage 1 with bassani slip-ons and just put a power vision on it from fuelmoto.
Bike pulls pretty well but the pinging is still there. Tried to run some octane booster through it today while riding in the mountains and it didn't do anything.
What is the easiest way to find an exhaust leak? This is the only thing I can think of that might be messing with the bike.

I got my Power Vision from FM a couple of months ago, and besides "richening" it up a bit there was also some pretty aggresive spark advance in the map.
Bike ran great, just developed the pinging. I have ran a few logs, noticed it pulled a little timing out of it when autotuning, and it has settled down.
They are set up to pull 8 degrees out if they detect spark knock, but it was tad aggresive for my setup, but again, the autotune feature has helped to dial it in.
Have the same issue with my brand new 2012 Ultra Limited. (1514 miles on it now) Riding across the desert from El Paso to Fresno CA. On the power or decelerate and knock goes away. In that cruise part of the throttle, it sounded like a cat diesel engine. Talked to 2 different dealers in 2 different states and was told that "everything pings in the heat" ( temps were 100 plus most of the time and running Chevron or Shell 91 octane exclusively) Both shops said if it grenades, it's covered under warranty.... It will be getting new pipes, Intake and tune very soon to hopefully avoid any problems..

Mine started around 5500 on the clock and started getting more pronounced as the miles added up. After reading everything about it and talking to a couple forum members I concluded I needed to regulate the amount of fuel being dispensed and the only way to do that is a fuel manager. After deciding which one, I called FM and spoke to Jamie. He loaded a map on it close to what I had and I went from there but I didnt stop there. The PCV I went with has the ability to pull up areas of my fuel ' map' so I could see what and where. I had to tweak the map just a little and all my ping is gone. If you have someone tune it your going to be at their mercy if it needs adjusting. Learn everything by reading and subscribing to every thread on the subject. After awhile you will start getting it and you will be able to adjust it yourself....if I can do it, anyone can. There are many experienced ' tuners' as their called willing to help you dial it in. It took a whole year for me to get it in my head that HD can only load fuel maps in these bikes to satisfy EPA guidelines and thats the problem. The PCV ' tuner' will allow you to put more fuel where you need it. Get to reading cuz ignorance really isnt bliss, its quit frustrating.
I have heard this sound on my stock 2011 RKC w/ 103, but for me it only happens when I am in a steep and sustained descent when riding in the mountains. It's almost never very hot, but the engine is running high in RPMs since I'm engine braking. I have never heard this when it's exceptionally hot or when I'm accelerating hard. Has anyone else experienced pinging during a sharp descent?
I'm thinking of going with FuelMoto's Power Vision and AC without changing out exhaust or head pipes. FuelMoto says just the tune and AC should address the pinging.

My 2012 Ultra Classic does the same thing. It just had the 1000 mile service, but the shop was unable to reproduce it. I always run 92 octane from Chevron. What sort of octane booster is acceptable for HD?
