I wear chaps as part of my saftey clothing - I want the best I can get to protect ME - I found and have been using http://www.johnsonleather.com/ now for several years for 99% of all my leather. Allan is the operator there - this is a small shop in SF,CA and they both sell off the rack and make custom leathers. I am 5'6" and for years I have always had a hard time finding cloths that fit right. I met Allan back in 97 and I now have jackets and chaps that Fit and made out of some of the best leather hides out there. His customer service is 110% and his leathers are guaranteed for Life.. their moto is "use our hide Not yours" So, when you are protecting your skin - don't go for cheap - get the best you can - when you sliding down the street - saving that little bit of $$ all of a sudden does not seem important....
Funny you mention this as last week I was riding with mine on and could not figure out what the smudges were coming from..
ORIGINAL: matt
The first chaps I purchased at the leather store were about a hundred dollars and the quality seemed as good as the HDs but when riding I started to noticed smudges on the sides of the fuel tank from the dye on the chaps that was really hard to clean. I picked up a set of HD units on clearance and had no more issue.
Speaking of chaps, does anyone know where I can find a pair of vented chaps, for summer riding?? I have a vented coat and gloves, H/D and as yet I haven,t seen a pair of chaps. thanks.
I have Fox Creek leathers and will only buy their products. The quality is worth every cent of the price and customer service is the best. http://www.foxcreekleather.com/
Both Sean & I have chaps that came from a local leather shop in one of the flea markets here in Indy. I have no complaints. Just make sure they are lined and ask the shop if they guarantee their product. The shop here guarantees them for life. If anything goes wrong they will fix it....for life! I guarantee Harley won't do that for you.

go the link in my post above - they have started making "perf leather" chaps... I have some made last year and again,,, fit is great and the leather is super and perfed - ask for Allan and tell him the Turlock Fire fighter sent ya...
I have also bought a leater vest from Fox Creek - still like the custom fitting from Johnsons
I don't know about Wilson's chaps, but I've seen some of their other leather products and they don't come close to the quality of Fox Creek. $130 is about what you'd pay at Fox Creek.

Anybody know about the quality of the national chainWilson's leather goods because I was just told their $240 chaps are on sale for $130.
