I have the plain old HD one and it works great. Mount the bracket on the fender and plug in the back rest. Cant get any simpler than that.

Had the hd non adjustible and now have the adjustible. Whatever backrest you get, you will wonder why you didn't get one before. Good luck

Got the Mustang rider backrest, and am very pleased. Quick to put on/take off, and folds fwd if you need it to make it easier to swing your leg over. Very simple install (if you've got the standard seat/slot location, that is).

I have the backrest that is made for the Street Glide. I like it, but install is a PITA. I happen to have an extra mounting bracket if you want. Just pay the shipping.

here is my newbie question - are the adjustable backrests only adjusting up and down, not forward and backward? My concern is with being a shorter rider, the backrest would make me actually lean back too much where I wouldn't have a good grip on the bars anymore...

The one I have adjusts forward, back, and height. Not all simple adjustments, but you can get it exactly how you want.

I know you said you didn't want the adjustable backrest but it's still worth considering. On a long trip, it's nice to be able to change your riding position. The adjustable backrest allows just that...you can change so that you're sitting a little more leaned forward or backward. Those small changes in posture go a long way towards making you more comfortable. On the adjustable backrest you just reach down and move a lever and can re-position yourself.
