Default Fork help (2010 SG)

Never had any issues... Then I had a set of lowers powder coated and had them switched by a Indy. Asked about SE fork oil and was told that it was not needed in the 2010. I really had no complaints about the front end before so I was OK with his response. Took bike out for about a 150mi ride and the front end is complete mush and bottoming out ALOT (I live in WI and the roads are crap).

Possible issues that i can come up with from my research...

1. Indy switched springs for older (worn out) ones and kept mine... (not likely... great rep)

2. Indy wrong about oil

3. Fork oil filled a little low (not 100% sure if this can cause the issue.)

I am looking for some insight... I am decent with a wrench so changing the oil, or adding some not an issue.

Also... If a change is the recommendation... Do I drain and put in 10.8oz... adding the same amount as taken out really isn't an option if the possibility of being low is there.

*** Yes, I know I should take it back to him seeing as I paid for the job and am not satisfied, but it is honestly easier and faster for me unless it would take more than a complete oil change.***

thanks for the help... been reading the forum for about 1.5 years and finally decided to post up.

Whether you do it yourself or take it back, it definitely sounds like the fork oil needs attention. If you do it yourself, I would measure how much comes out to verify your #3 suspicion and fill it back up with 10.8oz. There is a really good post on here, step by step on how to change the fluid that you should be able to search and find. You will also find numerous opinions on what fluid to put back in there. Based on the roads you described, I would highly recommend a 50/50 mix of the screamin eagle (not Heavy duty) and the OEM. If you go straight SE I guarantee you will regret it. Good Luck.

Thanks for the response.

Am I Better going with an "other than OEM" oil with a weight in the middle?

In theory if you use half 10wt and half 20wt you get 15wt, but is this how it works in the real world? or does the lighter weight oil sit on top of the heavier? (real question... not being a smart ***)

The ultimate goal of going with a weight heavier than OEM is to lessen the dive when braking and obtain a tighter feel in the front end. But if you go too heavy, it will ride rough and doesn't handle as well on those less than perfect roads and especially in curves. I don't remember the specific weights of the two oils I mentioned for the 50/50 but it's what I used to find the happy medium without having to go buy more. I can't be more technical about it because I'd rather drink beer or go ride or anything else that doesn't involve math, physics, or chemistry... (real answer... not being a smart ***) lol

Check your fork oil. I used to ride one tueb with stock and one with heavy duty.

I've also mixed them like what was mentioned above with good results.

I also dont understand the "2010s dont need heavier weight' comment. The front shocks havent changed much in decades...

I understand how to drain and fill the oil... Can I check the level without draining it completely and measuring what comes out? If yes, please explain... also do I need the bike level or on the side stand when I measure?

Also... is ther anyother adjustments on the stock forks that could cause this? Pre-load...etc?

Also I FYI... I am about 250lbs and the GF is 105lbs if this matters.

Looks like you are on track with your assessment.

What you are describing sounds like it could be one of three things:

1. Wrong oil put in
2. Showa base valve not put back when the forks were reassembled.
3. springs got mixed up

At this point I would not mess with it myself as you would create an unknown for them.
