I believe 40psi is max air for the rear shocks on your bike, I would try 20 for both single and 2 up and see how it rides/handles.

I run 35-40 for 2 up. I usually leave them set that way even when I ride alone. Seems about right.

Max pressure for an 01 is 30. I would start around 20 to 23.

the older air shocks used lower pressure than the newer ones. I had an older road king and ran 5 single and 10 two-up.

There is no "set" pressure. Try different pressures and see what gives you the best ride based on your needs. its very subjective. Anything from 0 to 40psi is correct if it makes you happy.

When I had the OE shocks on my bike I ran 12-16 solo and it was Ok, almost the same even if I ran 0 only difference was on the bigger bumps it bottomed with no air, but on the road it was fine. Some of the guys I ride with run 20-35 psi solo and like it. So you need to try out different pressures and decide.
