I was always a staunch anti helmet guy. After my grandson was born, I deceided to attempt wearing a helmet. I got a Harley 1/2 helmet and find it very comfortable and I don't think it looks bad. I wear it all the time now. It was only around $100 and good quality and fit. Maybe it's not a protective as a full face, but it's something.
Take a look at the HJC AC-2M, it's not a beanie but is a vented half-helmet and has side curtains for the colder days.
As the firefighter mentions above, I wear my FF 90% of the time esp when in rush-hour traffic on my commute cuz the safety and protection is FAR greater. When puttering around in the very small rural town I live in I do wear the half helmet on warmer days and I like it for such purposes especially when it's hot.
In three different situations I watched bikers being hauled away in a chopper after an accident. All three had serious damage to the helmets. They have returned to riding. Not much question they would not have with no helmet. I'll keep wearing my full face helmet. I gave up my 1/2 helmet a couple years ago.
I was riding my EGC one day without a helmet. I'm in Florida and some days it's just unGodly hot. I ended up at a campground for a break and ran into this 85 yr old woman. She proceeded to tell me that before her husband had passed on they hadtraveled the country for yrs. on thier Harley,....
Great stories and I could have stayed longer but had to get going.....As I started to head out she said this to me,.....
"Greg, what do you call a person that doesn't where a helmet?,......"....I said I don't know what,. She says,...." an organ donor"
These old folks are notorious for few words,.....but now I'm wearing a 3/4 Harley Davidson helmet. I'm used to it now,.....and I know that it's the wise thing to do. I've had to many close calls and know that one day that old ladies words will have saved my life.
Yes it feels great running down the road with the wind in your hair,....but there are people in everyones life that want to see you again.
Use your head,.....and not as a sledgehammer
Greg
1st of all, I am not in favor of mandatory helmet laws. That being said, there is absolutely no doubt whatever that you are safer wearing one, I have seen specific exampleswhere good friends of mine lived to ride another day after an accident where their helmet was badly damaged or totally destroyed.
I will never ride without a helmet & have tried a bunch of different ones over the 30+ years I have been riding. I like my Seer 1/2 helmet better than any other helmet I have owned. The Seer is VERY comfortable & doesn't make you look like a "mushroom head".
