I would like to start wearing a helmet. I like the look of a half helmet, but the only ones I see are DOT helmets that have a huge amount of padding and sit way high on your mellon. Where can I find a closer fitting half helmet?
For looks?
Get whatever you want. Put your baseball cap on backwards, who cares.
For safety?
Check out what works. The DOT rating in BS. Snell is a better rating system and some of the better helmets greatly exceed both. Comfort is also a factor in any helmet and better padding makes for a better fit.
While everyone makes there own choice in helmets I think most would agree that full face offers the most protection followed by 3/4 and then 1/2.
some times in the winter I ware a cheap 3/4 helmet to keep the ears warm. Most non dot helmets are lighter(just plastic). But neck got sore and felt like a horse with blinders. So in the winter ware a beeny cap for ears. Look at those helmets at swap meets. just plastic and little padding.
If you are looking for a half helmet you are not going to find anything other than a DOT rating. A half helmet won't meet Snell. If you are looking for a light and thin half helmet check www.carbonfiberhelmets.com as has been discussed on this forum. They have to versions; one a DOT rated and the other not. Both seem very thin and have had a lot of good reviews. I am planning on getting one before the spring; my wife hates my cheap plastic beanie and is starting to give me grief. Anyone else that has one please please post your comments as I would like to hear what you think, especially if you have had it awhile.
I have been a Firefighter for 34 years. Started riding again back in 96.. Took the rider saftey course in Stockton Ca - Temp that day was about 105 - as the helmets were being past out, I grab the 1/2 first, about an hour later I ask the inst for the full face - being so hot the inst tried to talk me out of it for a lot of reasons... after about an hour later, the inst came over {hot and restricted - huh????} I told him I actually felt like I was at work and it felt "right"... Since then both the wife and I wear the Arai 99% of the time - we do have the 1/2 {approved} for around town and at ralleys - It is more of a risk with the 1/2 and I take it when I have it on... The other 99% its the Arai... I have been a FF long enough to see what the chin look like after several yards on the pavment... What type of helmet is your choice - Hell, I like the looks and feel of NO helmet, but for me, I will keep the Arai - thats my choice..
I would assume if you want toSTART wearing a helmet it is for safety. Where I live (California)it's required. It is the smart thing to do IMO. If you aren't worried about safety than blow off the DOT and snell and get a helmet you like. Personally I owe my intact melon and life to a helmet and will always be willing to sacrafice in some areas. Good luck.
