I have a new 2012 Ultra Classic. My wife and I tried to go for a ride but the engine heat buildup was so bad that my wife could not take it. The temp outside was 100, but she said the heat off the engine was just too bad. Anyone else have this problem and if so any solutions??
The catalyst in the exhaust is probably most of your problem, so you might consider buying a catless pipe. Call Fuel Moto, as they have several from which to choose including their own SS version.
It just does not make sense that a company like HD would produce something that makes it so bad to ride in the heat, you think an engineer making a 6 figure salary could come up with a solution.... just my opinion
They have one. You buy the bike, you get third-degree burns on your thighs, and they'll then sell you a pipe that runs cooler. They may even have an HD-brand burn ointment. It's brilliant marketing.
well its gonna be another hot record setting simmer, I meant Summer.
I bought my 11 SG last July 15 in the middle of our hottest summer and rode the crap out of her with no problems...except....
I rode it more than I washed it. Bugs got onto the shiny part of the fins on the motor, dried and petrofied and stuck on there, ruined my shiny engine, no more shine, 19,000 miles and 11 months and this engine looks like an 8 year old engine.
It is rare to see it that hot in this territory. But if it does, I probably will limit my riding to situations where I keep moving and do not get stuck in traffic that cooks you!
There is not much you can do about the heat. I rode some this last Sunday. It was 100f here in Houston.
It all boils down to how bad do you want to ride? I am use to it and been in the south Texas all my life. That doesn't mean I like it though. I have days where I just would rather not deal with the heat, like today........lol
You said it, brother. I got on 290 about 3:30 this afternoon and the air temp was 109. My hat is off to those guys I see riding on a day like today. I usually see three or four in the HOV lane and I can't believe they are enjoying the ride. I know that I wouldn't be. I hope they have an air-conditioned car at home that they are choosing not to drive because they like to ride.
Was 100F on the way home from work today - I was soaking wet by time I got home... needless to say, the ride to work in the early AM was way more comfortable.
And yes, my 2008 103 (with no cat) gets pretty darn hot.
