Hello all,
I have a question that hopefully some people may be able too help me with. The other day when leaving a friends the bike started sputtering at a slow speed ( maybe 10 mph). The check engine light kept coming on and the bike ran like crap. It stalled a coupe of times, but restarted every time. Ran rough on restart but restarted. Once up too speed it ran great without a problem. Then the next day I rode it too a BBQ at my parents and she ran flawless. Had too run too the store shortly after I had gotten there and once I pulled into the store parking lot it started doing it again. It was fairly hot both days. I was wondering if maybe my ignition module is starting too go or if I am thinking that is the wrong place too look. How do you test that.
when there is a problem and the check engine light comes on, that means the bike is throughing a code, http://watamix.com/harley/ will show you how to retrieve the code and you can look the code up online. Your problem sounds like a faulty crank position sensor (CKP), which is easy to swap out, but check the code, it will tell you for sure where your problem is
Thank You fxdxrdr. I did try the steps in that web page that you sent me. However I did not have any codes too read. Would the ckp be an intermitten issue that may or may not show in the ecm codes? I hat too change that sensor out on a guess.

Clean and tighten battery cables, loose/dirty cables can cause both issues. Let us know what you find.
2001 still had the Magnetti Marelli Injection which can be a nightmare for many different reasons. Don't ask me how I know this. Try making sure the small ports in the throttle body for the idle circuit are clear. If I remember correctly, that was an easy fix for intermittent low rpm problems.
The MM was more known for the idle speed creeping up until you were idling about 3000 rpm. That said, I have heard of it going the other way. Search on here for MM idle and you should get some hits. I had an 01 and put 80K on it without ever having any MM issues.
Thank you all for the input that you have given. I would love too say that I have fixed the problem at this point but as of yet I have not. I have been doing some testing too see if there is a pattern too how this problem keeps showing up. I have tried on several occasions too retrieve codes from the ECM but there never are any. The other day I went too get the bike out of my storage trailer, fully enclosed , and the anti theft system was active. I live in a rural area of NH and my closest neighbor is about 300 feet away and they do not have automatic doors on the garage. I am wondering if there might be something too do with the anti theft system that is causing this problem. Unfortunately this problem is intermiten and is enough too drive a person insane trying too figure it out. Also it has me really bummed out seeing as how I do not want too take the bike on long rides for fear of it dieing on me somewhere in the middle of no where. Any help is appreciated and welcome. Also is there a way too test the cam sensor too see if it is bad. Thank you all in advanced.
You might check the fuel pressure regulator in the fuel tank and the return line while your in there. Return might have a pin hole in it. You might also check the ground down by the starter and make sure it's tight with no corrosion. Check the plug-in for the ECM and make sure it's still seated tight, might unplug it and check all the pins for corrosion. Take the air cleaner off and look inside the MM injection at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock position and you will see the 2 air bleeds. I spray SeaFoam in them to clean them out about every other month or so. You can also use carb cleaner. I also start mine and hold rpm's up and spray SeaFoam staight down the intake to clean the whole thing out.
Thank you Bodean, I will check out that stuff tomorrow. Going to be way to hot today to work on the bike. I have Monday off from work so I will fiddle with it then. After running to the store to get some Sea-foam. Sounds like you have run into some similar problems before. I guess it is time to invest in a service manual for the bike.
