Nope, not in front. He must learn to keep up for the good of the group. If he cannot keep up or will not agree to ride at another position within the group, then you guys need to do some soul searching before you drag his *** along on a long trip. It will only lead to frustrations and danger. You need to settle this now, before your trip.

Hopefully with another group. Just kidding. In the middle. So the guy in back can move the group from lane to lane safely and the guy in front can lead.

If the slower rider is less experienced, unsure, whatever, I would surround him/her with experienced riders by putting him/her in the middle of the group. It would be too distracting for them to lead and be "responsible" for the group, and might be tough keeping up from behind. The lead riders could keep the pace reasonable for the following riders to keep a tight formation.

Rule of the road you only keep the first person behind you in your mirror. Then if you don't like the way they are riding or keeping with you maybe it's time to not ride with them anymore.

why in the world would you want to ride in a tight formation? spread out a couple of hundred yards apart...lots of room for cars to get thru the group. it is more fun to look around and enjoy the scenery than trying to maintain a "space" between bikes.
it is not fair to the slower rider to expect him to maintain a certain pace--just tell him when and where you are stopping--leave him alone.

I agree. It's the leaders responsibility to ride at a pace that the expierience and ability of everyone in the group can handle. If you've got someone in the group that is struggling, it's the sweeps responsibility to get him or her there in on piece. If they continue to be a burden on the group, quit inviting them. If you really want to ride hard and tight, only take those capable and you trust.

Some one else thinks that he should ride in the back and the lead guy should ride to the last guys riding style.

My goal is to be able to ride in a nice tight formation and move as one unit.
You just described me, and i much prefer the back so as not to screw up the rest of the group. If i get left behind that's fine, i ride what I'm comfortable with.
