Default lower back discussion

well, I been off the bike for about 10 days due to unexpected medical issues not related to my back. But in recovering from the unexpected condition, I noticed the stiffness and soreness in my lower back is basically gone. I do have a history of lower back problems, but kinda side burnerd those issues as part of living with it.

so today I went out and change my rear shock angles by moving them to the 3rd hole on my lowering kit, pump the air up and took it for a spin. the ride felt softer.

I do have a back brace I can put on to help.

maybe I should look into a police bike seat with the springs and air systems

Are you telling us this just for GP, or are you asking for help?

Have you tried a backrest? What is causing the discomfort?

The riders backrest is probably the best addition I have ever made to my bike.
Before the backrest , I could ride maybe 30 miles and I'd have to return home and rest.
After installation , I can be having a pretty bad day (back wise) and go for a ride and come back feeling better than before.
I have the non adjustable and it maybe took me 30 different tries to get it right , but now I can go about 300 miles a day and feel less pain than before.
The vibration and placement of the rest must shake things back into place ever so slightly and feels great.
Having had back surgery and needing another because of a degenerative condition , I would recommend one highly.
It literally saved me from not riding anymore...

I could not ride any distance without my riders backrest. I have a mustang seat with adjustable backrest and can ride all day with short stops every 2 hours or so.good luck

A backrest is a good idea...... also, the adjustment of the backrest is critical. I was running mine so that it was in the center of the slot in the seat, and was having serious back pain on long rides. I moved the backrest as far back as I could get it, and the pain went away.

Experiment with placement. Just having the backrest is not enough.

Get a backrest
I have degenerative disk problems with my back. I could not ride for 20 miles without being in severe discomfort. The backrest allows me to ride all day with no problems.
I do need a seat with some cushion also to absorb the shocks in highway bumps (bridges, railroad tracks)

I also tried a 2011 Ultra seat (which I assume you have), I could not ride 60 miles without it killing my tailbone.

The Police seats are very comfortable and you can get a backrest for them also, but they move up and down when you shift and that kinda drove me crazy.

I havent had the surgery but everything else Mick is saying holds true for me as well. Without my backrest I would not be riding right now......I spare no expense when it comes to back support on seating. Save your money on the cop bike seat and spend it on the seat/rest combo. My mustang is too stiff for me in that arena but this isnt about me.....

+1 on all the backrest comments...wouldn't ride without one. One other thing to check is your riding position in relation to your handlebars. If you are too stretched/reaching too much that will add strain on your back as well. Make sure you can sit up with your back on the back rest, elbows slightly bent, hands at elbow level or slightly above.

When I changed out my stock seat for my Mustang the change in riding positon was only 1 1/2 inches further back but it was enough to give me one hell of a backache after a couple of hours. Switched out my bars so the riding position was more natural, end of back problems
