I'm new to Harleys -better late than never- and this is the best bike I have ever owned.
Have an apparent problem with my 2010 street glide with a 96 engine.
When cranking hot, hear a huge knock. It will start and sounds OK, but that noise bothers me because I assume there is a problem.
Is that normal? I put synthetic oil from the dealer in it, can't remember which one, that was 10w50 I think.
I read somewhere that there is not a compression release on these.
Also, when rolling off the throttle from highway speeds I get a slight smell of oil, but level is always good, and see no leaks or evidence of it in the exhaust pipes.

Do you know if you have the stock comp or the SE one? If stock, sometimes the comp with make a pretty good bang on start up. The fix is to make sure the comp bolt is secure...others replace the stock comp with the SE version.

Most use a 20w50 of various brands. You'll just have to find the brand that your bike likes the most.

I don't think the TC96 came with comp releases.

After a long ride and when the air cleaner cover is cool enough, remove the cover and filter. Gently lift the butterfly in the throttle body and see if there's much oil sitting in the throat.
Assuming you have a stock air intake system, the oil pressure is vented into the intake. Sometimes that will produce that "oil" smell.
