Since you asked: I'd say you were a Jack ***.
"My wife didn't know how to get to our dest. so she told me not to lose her" and you didn't give a crap and rode like a bat outta hell.
I will admit I love finding a place in traffic that is open and ride there. But you were escorting someone. You could have done the same thing by driving slower (with the wife)for just a while.
It would be different if you were just talking about you and some buds.
Going a little faster than the flow to get to a more uncongested area of traffic is the safest way. I run into the same problems when we ride seperate bikes. I just tell her when she catches up to me (like when I get to a stop sign at a cross road and I can't take off before her and I get bitched at !) Ya wanna run with the big dog, ya gotta lift your leg high !.....
Thanks for the feedback! It seems most of you agree and ride very similar to me. When I feel crowded I have to accelerate out of it. When free I usually bring it back to about 5 over posted.
** Footnote - When we got on the secondary roads everything was fine, she followed about 1/4 mile behind and we arrived at the dest safely and together. I showed her a few of these posts and she had to let it go - she knows I'm a safe rider.
I like get away from average speed drivers but stay behind the fastest vehicles in some empty pocket if possible if not stay in the fast lane with the traffic flow. I rather pass other vehicles then them passing me cause I've no control on other drivers judgement.
When alone my cruise is usually set at 75. The variables in this case were no options of route and trying to keep the wife in rear view mirror. I just felt I was in a dangerous situation... It was 2 lane, near Fayetteville NC. Again, I am a really safe rider as a rule.
the only problem i see is that you hauled *** to get out of what you considered a dangerous situation, to leave your wife in kids in it......
I've run many miles in a pack with cars on the Interstates. I find groups of drivers who obviously drive those roads often and know what they're doing and I'll fall in with them.
I fall into "The best defense is a good offense" crowd when in traffic... I would much rather be moving through the crowd, than have the crowd moving around me...
I try to stay in the 'clear'. Usually, that means speeding up to get out of clots of cars, then slowing back down a little, once I'm clear. There's no way to stay completely out of traffic on a busy freeway...but I try.
As for blasting off and losing your old lady and kids...that to me sounds like 'an accident waiting to happen.' (One brought about by your wife, once she catches up with you...and they always do catch up, eventually...)
