Default Small mods today - thanks to the Forum

I raised the bars on my Ultra to hopefully remove some arm strain and avoid the cost and hassle of new bars.

Also cut down the stock windshield from the bottom. It looked like crap which is why I did not cut from the top but worked great. That save the $$$ for a new one and gave me more to put toward a Stage 1.

Thanks to the forum for all the helpful info that allowed me to get these done.

How did you raise the bars? How much did you raise them? Can this be done to a Street Glide?

I raised mine by just rasing the bar ends not the hole handle bar. Now they set about four inches above thr gas tank when turned full lock one way ot the other. Don't know if this is what he is talking about or not.

Yup - just rotated them up. Hardest part was figuring out how to get the ignition lock off.

I did the same thing. I was able to get the lock off but couldn't figure out how to get the little ign, acc, lock, plate off to remove the cover.

On the shield issue - lots of posts on the forum about this.

As far as getting to the bars:
  • Remove the ignition lock - there is a good YouTube video about this.
  • Once the switch is out there is a bolt as the top part of the stem. It is flat on two sides. Make a mark as to what position it is in. When you put things back together you can get the cover on in such a way that is does not line up with the markings on the decal plate if the bolt is looser or tighter than when you took it off.
  • The decal plate comes off with some gentle prying with a small screw driver
  • There is one screw on each side of the switch cover. You do not need to remove the cover, just move it back a bit
  • The hard part is getting the allen wrench into the space below the radio. Some have ground down a wrench to fit in the space. I did not have a grinder so I very carefully pushed up on the plastic around the radio. On the first screw a put a very small dent in the plastic. On the second I took a very thin piece of plastic (think the thing that comes on the collar of a shirt at the dry cleaner) and slipped it between the plastic and the wrench. Mover the bars one way and then the other to gain more room.
  • You only need to loosen the 2 rear bolts to move the bars.
  • Do everything in reverse.
