I was at a seminar and was told that the set up on a touring tank allows a fuel pump to run dry when then the level of gas is less then 1/2. This is mostly caused when on turns causing gas to shift from one chamber to the other.. Thoughts??
inquiring minds want to know
That would be one hell of a long turn to let 1.5 gallons of gas shift through a 1/4 inch diameter cross over.
I heard, (was not a seminar though) that people that come up with theories like this, should be ignored.
Which one, the fuel shifting or the ignoring part???? Bwahahahahaha! What if I'm below half a tank and I decide to ride my motorcycle for miles while leaning it hard to one side to lessen the center tire wear, that might give it time to flow over ..... OMG! Who makes this stuff up? That's why I don't go to seminars ....
I have a 6 gallon touring tank beside me as I type and there is no balance pipe underneath. In fact there is nothing to join the two halves, except the natural shape close to the seat.

I don't know about all that 1/2 tank chit... The other day I put 5.8 gallons of gas in my 6 gallon tank. Damn scary, but it never stop running on me. Reserve light came on, shown 32 miles till empty, then said, or shown LO, till I finally got to a gas station. Cranked right up and went on. When it goes to LO, I know i have about 8-10 more miles to go. I have done it! (not on purpose tho) It may very from bike to bike, but I have put that much in it a few times. Yeah, down right getten empty!

Empty for sure, personal best (or worst, depending on how you look at it) 5.97 gallons. Out in nowhere, not paying attention, low fuel light came on, had to wander to find a small town. Never even sputtered, but I'm thinking it was damn close .....
