Mine went bad at 30,000 mile (2010 Ultra). Covered under warranty and told them to install SE one. Harley is discovering as they increase standard engine sizes they need to change other parts too. SE compensator is standard now on newer bikes.
I have seen the model year 2011 tech forum and it says they use a se comp. But then in the 2012 model year notes it says "all models use same compensator". The pictures look completely different. Anyone know what comp is in the 2012 's?
I just changed my OEM comp out for the SE comp last week. The OEM had no signs of wear on it, but my hot startups were very noisy. The starter checked out ok, the starter drive looked new and was changed two years ago for the same noisy startup. It was better after the drive change, but it didn't fix the problem for very long it seemed. Now with the new SE comp it starts great every time. I do hear a little whirring at hwy speeds that I don't think was there before, but it isn't something I am going to worry about. That could be because my new SuperTrapp 2:1 exhaust is so much quieter that I can now hear the whir....LOL. I only have 120 miles on the new comp at this writing. I will be leaving on a two week run up northwest US doing about 6500 miles and that should tell me something, hopefully that it is all good.
As a note to my problem I talked to my local HD top Mech who is a long time friend of mine from before he became one of their mechanics and he said that if the comp, starter drive, and the clutch basket gear was fine, he would blame the solenoid as being weak and not holding the drive in during hot starts. That got me to thinking maybe the 5 year old battery was just a little weak and I ordered a new Yuasa battery with 330 cca and 30 ah to put in before I leave on my trip.
I am not trying to hyjack the thread here, just trying to point out my experiences with noisy startups. FWIW.
