Sorry guys I'm lazy and on my phone at work so the search function kinda stinks. First oil change for myself is what I meant to say. I'm at 8500 miles and the previous owner last changed at 3000 miles.
yeah, I had put engine oil in my trans about a month ago and too clunky; just replaced with Redline vtwin trans yesterday and immediately is quieter and shifts nicer.
The owners manual will tell you what weight of oil you should be using. If you don't have an owners manual... get one! You should also get a service manual too if you're gonna be working on your bike. Amsoil, Mobile 1, Redline and Royal Purple are all good oils.
Brad Penn, my local HD mechanic told me they are not reccomending engine oil in the trans anymore, he told me to put a good gear oil in it.
Well that's about time!
Is the MoCo recommending that, or do you simply have a good Indy or Dealer?

No doubt. Right product for the right application. Try using motor oil in your trucks engine, transmission and differential. What kind of results wil you get? What do you think the manufacturer will say?
The MoCo spent 10 years telling customers that synthetic oil wasn't necessary in Harley's, and some dealers even said it could hurt your bike. Then, some marketing guru figured that HD could enhance the bottom line if they embraced synthetic oil. So they came out with a cheap syn blend, slapped the bar and shield on it, marked it up 20 times and told people to use it in all three holes. Funny stuff indeed!
It's one thing to do this when you ride a bike with a unit construction engine and have no choice. It's another thing when you have a choice.
Auto 15W50 in the motor...formula plus in the primary and tranny...no use in paying more for V-twin oil when it doesn't share the primary like a metric......
Napa 15w50 4.99 a quart.... Amsoil, Mibil 1 Vtwin is fine also...
