You have to do Sturgis at least once. My wife and I went the week earlier as mentioned above. There was plenty of vendors already setup to sell you almost anything. We stayed in Deadwood which was very nice, just far enough away from any craziness.
Go and have fun!!
Just did Sturgis myself for the 1st time with the girlfriend. Stayed in Rapid City motel which I reserved in February and it was as close as I could get. If I would do it again I would go the week before. The riding and the sights were awesome, the crowded roads were too much for me. Sitting in 95 degree heat on an idling Harley in traffic gets old real fast. Saw many a-holes on bikes passing other bikes on blind bends in a hurry to get nowhere. It was a sight to see just once, but the rides were the highlight for me.
Go the week before and see the country...if you are in the mood you can prolong your visit and stay during the rally. It's all about the ride...don't know with "today's Sturgis" if you get that anymore
Personally, I enjoy the ride to Sturgis is more enjoyable in many cases than Sturgis itself. But I get to ride through the Rockies and some awesome scenery along the way. Just go do it once and if you need a motel for next year, get ready for some sticker shock.

Talking to my riding bud tonight he out of the blue says..."hey, what would you think about Sturgis next summer?"
Honestly after watching full throttle saloon I told myself Sturgis is not the place for me!
Now after thinking about it for a few hours I am somewhat interested...
Looking for some advice for first timers, It would be a ride from Eastern WI to Sturgis for the rally, he says its around 800 miles,we would do it in two days. Where do you stay? Neither one of us are the "camping" type so definately hotel. Can you get hotel in Sturgis during the rally? Should we consider Rapid City? Lets hear some ideas
Ha! The Full Throttle Bafoons. If those idiots can make enough money at Sturgis to live off of the whole year then I don't want any part of it. I just gotta laugh when I see guys with FTS tattoos they got there to commemorate their visit to Sturgis.
