JMO, but an oil temp gage is almost as useless as the air temp gage.
I go with the theory on my diesel truck the oil temp is always close to the coolent which is engine temp. So I'm thinking the oil temp is giving an idea of what the engine temp is on the air cooled bike.

I disagree. I replaced the Air Temperature gage with the Harley Oil Temperature gage. Works great. True, you can't trust the temperature reading to be exactly correct. But it will give you a range. Anything was better than the Air Temperature gage that it replaced.

If you read Donny Pedersen's books about Twin Cams, you will find that our motors are not just air cooled. They are also oil cooled. There are two oil jets that shoot oil onto the underside of the pistons to cool them off to help avoid pre detonation.
I also got rid of the air temp gauge in favor of the HD oil temp gauge. I was surprised when I installed it. This kit had me plug the new harness into the existing harness where is was plugged into the air temp sender. Had to search for it since it was located inside the speedo pod on my Road Glide.
