Default every thing is hot

i just purchased 03 ultra classic with the 88ci. first ultra, previous bike was 1977 shovelhead so i have a few questions.

1. the primary gets very hot even after short ride and continues to get hotter after turning off the engine, is this normal? my shovelhead always had open belt primary so i have no idea.

2. during ride engine seems to be very hot on the right side, i can feel it on my thigh, is this normal? i do have lower fairings could this be the cause and should i be worried?

3. it seems like this bike has a lot of engine vibration at idle and getting on it, is this normal? i figured ultra would be a lot more smooth compared to my shovel.

i have checked all fluids, oil was low, all other where fine, bike has 40k on it. like i said my last and only bike was a shovelhead and with those heat= bad things. am i just being to cautious.

Don't let that oil get low. Hopefully, you got a manual with it. Oil is to be checked when motor is hot w/kickstand down position.

Mmmm.....sounds kinda familiar to my recent introduction to an Ultra. Mine is an 02.

As for the vibration, I thought it was excessive, as well. I was used to riding a Night Train, which, as another kind forum-member explained to me, is an 88, but a totally different animal. Mine vibrates a lot at idle, but smooths out on the open road.

As for the heat, you may be running a bit lean. But, it may not be anything to fret over. Do you have any other symptoms? Yellow or blue heat shields? Mine is hot, as well.....but pretty much like the NT. These newer, larger engines(96, 103, 107) are designed to run leaner because they're getting caught up in the EPA regs. Ours....not so much

I would recommend putting it in the shop and having it checked out. I did, and according to my indy, I did it just at the right time. My cam chain-tensioners were just about gone. Mine was at 44k, and the front one was just about gone. That is something that you DEFINITELY should get checked out, especially with your mileage.

While mine was in, I upgraded my cams, had new exhaust put on, and all the fluids changed and their various areas checked out. Getting ready to install a Power Commander and I should be ready to go.

Make sure you are checking that primary level and also the transmission oil level. You don't want those to be low. Low oil in the primary would contribute to more friction, thus more heat. Best to go ahead and change them out with new lubricants and be done with it.
