I'm seriously considering buying a 97 Road King with EFI. It's in very good condition, mileage under 14k, garage kept, well maintained, ample goodies included, etc. etc. Runs well. This will be my first Harley, but not my first street bike.
Are there any current or former EVO RK riders here? I've noticed most members of the forum have late model bikes.
Any opinions, concerns. etc about this era of Road Kings would be greatly appreciated.
That bike has the morelli fuel injection system on it, and while the delphi system is an improved system in a few ways, there's nothing wrong with that bike with the evo engine. True that the evo had a few problems like base gaskets and other small problems like cracking of the weld on the split in the rear exhaust pipe , but it is still a great engine. I had a 96 RK and I liked it . It ran great but I did the stage 1 air kit and mufflers on it and it woke it up.
I did not have a RK but I had a 1992 Softail Custom with the EVO. I had a carb on it, but let me tell you that that bike ran perfect. I had over 62,000 miles on it and it did not use any oil or leak on drop. I just spent the time to make sure that if there was an issue with it, I took care of it right away and did not let it get any worse. The worse thing I had to repair on it was the gaskets in the Rocker Boxes started to leak and then I just bought a complete set and replaced them all in the boxes. Make sure you have a good breathing engine. The EVO is known for blowning a little oil by the breather valves in the heads....That will be your only problem that I can see. The EVO is a great engine and there are a lot of aftermarket parts out there for it.
Good luck in you purchase and welcome to the bagger family.
If the price is right and the bike is like you say it is, the EVO motor like TC said is a good motor, 100k with proper maintenance is no problem. I think the gasket and oil puking deal was the biggest thorn in the EVO's side, the EVO's run a geared cam( wish the stock TC's did too) , they have good heads and the rest of the bike is pretty similiar to today's newest HD's One thing to remember old Harley's never die they are just rebuilt.
I had a 95 EVO Roadking, my wife had a 97 Lowrider EVO, and I had an 87 Heritage EVO. They are good engines, and all were problem free. I had near 80,00 on the Roadking, and wife had 47,000 on the Lowrider.
