O2 sensors are on the pipes....I think you might need to let a mechanic work on it...That is if you really can't find the O2 sensors....No disrespect but that is pretty basic.
I also have an 08 with 35K and haven't had starter or compensator issues but was told that if you have a PC III or V to make sure you hit the starter button as soon as you push the button to run. For some reason mine, and others I know, start better this way.
The guys at Fuelmoto told me this is because the PC picks up its power from the fuel pump. If you notice when you flip the run switch on, the fuel pump starts, but will stop shortly after that. Then the PC has to wait for it to start again to get power. Once the bike is started the fuel pump doesn't stop, for obvious reasons. The funny part, to me, is that the local dealer says that you should always wait for the engine light to turn off before starting. For some, obvious, reason I believe Fuelmoto over the dealer. You would to after 5 minutes with the head service writer. Again, must my opinion.
Come on Mike - you have been on this site long enough; and like me, have read hundreds of posts with regards to harley davidson starter issues.
As you stated in your reponse; there is no doubt that starters are a constant source of aggravation for HD owners.
And is there ANY reason HD should change their ways; when that's all they do is keep replacing similar part for part which keeps their shops; both parts and service, busy.
Update - I parked the bike for the winter and just had it picked up by the dealer 2 days ago. They called last night and said that it was the starter clutch, a replacement was in stock for $170. I will post the hours to fix once I see the bill.
Anybody here used the Spragg starter clutch drive? I see them advertised in AI magazine. Sell for about $125. Just wondering if this would solve some starter issues...
I just ordered an All ***** on eBay for $72 for the very same reason for my '08. From everything I've read on this subject, the All ***** starter clutch is as good as any. Next mod will be the compensator. Most times the backlash from the comp is what causes the starter problems in the first place. Will try to hold off for the new comp Dark Horse is coming out with. Should be a vast improvement over SE comp.
From all the helpful posts I will definitely put in a SE Compensator if the problem happens again. In the meantime the dealer picked up the bike, installed a new starter clutch kit and charged 1 hour labor. They also washed the bike and the bill came to $234.95. Better than I was expecting.
I had the same issue on my 08 E-Glide Classic, it would never do it when cold or if it was not running for 20 min. or more, but if you stopped to gas up or go get something and came right back, you never knew when it was going to do it, sometimes it would fire right up or sometimes it would do that awful sounding metal on metal bang and kickback then you would have to hit it one or two more times before it would finally crank up. Replaced the OEM battery, and that didn't solve it, so I finally took it to my local dealer since I had the H.D. extended warranty, they replaced the starter and compensator, problem solved, my only cost the $50.00 deductible.
