I can think of 10,000 better things for our LEOs to do than go around busting motorcyclist for loud exhausts or missing cats. Talk about wasting tax payer money.

Really? Go catch a criminal or follow up on something useful like that dude from 1991 that skipped on the judgement I have against him for $2700. That **** stole $2700 from me (now there is a crime). Instead they want to bust motorcyclists for "loud exhaust"...jesus.

...Glad I got that out of my system. Whew!

I have been considering doing the same but lately I have been reading about people getting ticketed for noncompliant exhaust and that several states are beginning to crack down on anyone whose exhaust does not have the EPA stamp on it. I Know it has been illegal for a long time to remove cats but I never hear about anyone getting into any trouble over it.
I like to do road trips to anywhere and everywhere and although I haven't been to too many states I plan to hit most sooner or later ( God willing ).
So my question. In which states are the crack downs occuring and how sever is it.
If this is the only reason you are worried about taking a road trip, you're wasting your time worrying over nothing.

Recently Canada has become pretty strict regarding exhaust noise. Specifically Calgary and Edmonton. BikersPost.com usually follows things like this closely...

New York State will on occassion have check point stops set up aimed specifically at motorcycles. They ticket bikes for any exhaust other than what was OEM. They did it twice this year at the border, stopping bikes going to Canada for the Friday the 13th rally at Dover.

I rode my '12 RGU about 15 mi and returned to the dealership with a list of things to do. #1 was new headers. That friggin cat was about to set me on fire. Can't imagine riding several hundred miles a day with all that heat.
Also removed the lowers, added 254e cams and SE adjustable push rods, a race tuner, SE intake and Rinehart TD w Rinehart 4'' slip ons. It is still hot but tolerable. It is actually a little louder than need be but so far no problem with LE.

I also like to travel and have always kept my bikes street legal for that reason. While local small town deputies might not stop you for the sound alone (although some will--and it has become prevalent in some areas where rallies are held), if they stop you for some other reason (speeding) they will most likely check your pipes also. I want that EPA stamp on the pipes so I don't have an argument about whether I can ride the bike away, or whether it will be impounded for being illegal to operate on the street. More and more is being written about crackdowns on exhaust modification and I think challenges like that are going to be more common as time goes on.

On my Sportster, I had SE Street performance mufflers, which were louder than stock, improved performance (with a stage 1 AC and download) yet still carried the street legal seal. So far, I am still running the stock pipes on my RKC. After 13,000+ miles on it, I'm not really dissatisfied with the sound or performance and haven't gotten strong recommendations for anything that is street legal.
Reading many posts on this subject, and from my experiance, I can say that cats operate with heat. When you remove the cats the exhaust heat will be reduced, the exhaust tone will change and show no improvement in performance. Cats appear to be non-restrictive. I dont know any police that can tell if your cats are gone. If you go with modified factory mufflers by our sponsor from CT. and decat, you will get a quality factory muffler, the cat removed and cooler and will appear to be stock.

Maine is talking about noisey bikes and several towns are making traffic stops for them. But, I haven't heard about any hassles with decatting a bike yet. Although, with stricter inspection laws, I'm sure that emissions will become an issue in the not too distant future.
