I'm also a tad bit on the vertically challenged side (or as I call it "under tall") and ride a 2012 SG. I just received my seat back from Mean City Cycles who peformed the super narrow mod to it and cut about an inch out of the seating area while replacing the foam with memory foam. The mod was $135 and worth every penny of it.
I have a 11 sg and I to am vertically challenged. This is what worked for me.1. Lowered the front 1in. But if youve got a 21in. Wheel you might want to go 2in. 2. Sent my stock seat to mean city cycles and had the supper narrow rework done. 3. Sent my shocks to bitchin baggers and had them reworked to 11.25 in. 4. Had a 1/4 in added to soles of my boots. All in all my bike rides and handles great as well as having a real clean lowered look.
So looking at the progressive monotube. Is this something I could tackle myself in the garage, or have to get robbed at the dealer for installation? Specialty tools needed?
Depending on your budget... I would'nt waste the money on the monotubes... spend $100 on the 1 inch H-D lowering springs (check with previous owner first to make sure he didnt already do the front while he had it apart) spend the money on air ride for the rear! I'm 5'7" and that is exactly what I'm running and it still rides good... and you can hit the button and drop it to be flat footed whenever you need it! Only way to go in my opinon.
Sweet looking bike. It sounds like it rides the way you like it now and the only problem is the flat footing. if you're willing to invest some coin rather than dinking around with a bunch partial measures I highly recommend the drop seat kit from Paughco's for about $2k installed. http://www.paughco.com/2008-catalog/...w_Products.pdf, page 10. No stiffer ride, no change in the bike's geometry, just a 3+ inch drop in the seat height. You would probably have to pull back your bars some but that's about it.
Just did it on my 2010 SG for my very short 29" inseam and what a difference. I feel like I'm riding IN my bike again something I haven't felt since switching from a softail to a touring bike and I'm loving it.
Got a link for the 1" hd Lowering springs you mentioned? Still wondering if this is something I could do myself. Air ride sounds interesting, but maybey down the line.....
