Just bought my 07 Street Glide, I really want a tour pack and nice passenger back rest. Can't decide if I should customize what I have or go out and buy another bike with the options already on it.

Where can you find a good used tour pack?

 

I would watch the "classified" section on this website and Craigs List. They don't last long because they're in high demand. If you see one, better jump on it or the next guy will.

I was looking at EBay for them last week for a friend and they seem to have come down somewhat there. At least they did last week. Things may have changed since I was looking. However, used ones are often damaged. Either from a wreck or from some attachment a previous owner had on it. As a result some repairs would need to be performed. A really good one with all of the attachments, lights, wireing, antenna(s), etc., seems to go for the cost of a new one. Then there is the painting if it does not happen to be the same color as your bike.

Craigslist often has them listed.

When I got mine in December I found that it was easier to simply buy from Jon @ Horney Toad in Texas. I got the TP the same color as my bike. So, no painting. It was new, so no repairs.

I found an "as new" rack for it, that fit my 4 point, on Craigslist for a couple bucks less than new.

By the time you buy used, get it painted you can a new one, painted to match from one of he online dealers offering 20% off...plus some ( like Lake Shore) offer free shipping over $500.00 ...I bought a new chopped box and mounted solo style...also order the matching lock set so one key works all locks...and the liner.....

 

If you want to step down a bit in quality from a HD tour pack, you can google aftermarket tour packs and there are independent companies that make less expensive versions.

I picked up mine from Mutazu. It is lighter and a bit smaller than the HD, but I think it matches up with the lines of the street glide much better. The paint was better than I expected and was just a little darker than my Sunglow Red Harley.

Price was $138 and included a nice 2 piece backpad, two inner pads and attaching hardware . It needed 4 holes drilled into the bottom to bolt to the HD detachable mount, but is now easy on easy off in 30 seconds.

I expect this rig to hang on my garage wall most of the time, and attach it for longer trips.

Again it is not HD quality, but comes with a lock and restraint cables installed.

Felt comforting to be able to lock my full face, and a 1/2 helmet inside when eating lunch the other day.

 

Good deals can be found if your patient I looked for over a year, my buddy sold me his that he wasn't using cheap and it matched my bike. CL is the way to go, it's finding one local thats hard. Doesn't make much sense to me to sell your bike just because of a trunk, still cheaper to buy a new trunk than anoher bike.

 

Did you opt for the LED light? If so how much of a chore is it to install?

 

I went with the HD tourpak after having a cheap aftermarket on previous ride. Not cheap ($1402 with QD mts, backrest + match locks + oh, plus 50 bucks for prem hinges). If yah want a cheap luggage hauler for occasional use, go aftermarket. But, if yah want a safe, reliable backrest that can be transferred to a new bike, buy the HD tourpak + don't crap up yer bike with less.

 

I have one of the chopped touring packs that fix a 2006 street glide, bought from Harley Davidson, used once cobalt blue should fit,make resonable offer

 

I was in the same position as the OP.

Was beginning to take longer trips on my 07 Street Glide. Girlfriend need some extra storage, so I went to dealership to shop for a tour pack, back rest, and some other goodies.

When I realized that because of the frame change, none of the accessories would be transferable to the next bike I would purchase.

It was going to cost me around $3k for outfitting the older bike for longer distance touring, and about $10K to upgrade to a new bike, so gulped hard and picked up a new 2012 with cruise and ABS.

Glad now that I did. The new frame got rid of the high speed wobbles, and I enjoy the Cruise control much better than I expected.

The new bike came with the larger 103 engine, smoother cruise drive, and much better gearing.

I took the windshield, highway pegs, LED headlight, LED taillights and some other goodies that would fit off the old bike, and transfered to new bike.

Always bought used before, so this is my first new Harley.

First longer distance cruise was from San Diego up to Lake Tahoe with some buddies. Had a fantastic time, and attended the Reno rolling thunder event.

Was nice to be able to use the Tour Pack, and even a bag packed on the rack. Had enough room left over to carry some stuff homefor some buddies.

Drilled out the cat, and stuck on some vied's and the new bike is ready to go for the next 50,000 miles.
