Default RoadKing: Separate bar mounted speedo and tach? DONE!

I have an 09 FLHP with the tach mounted between the bars and I love the position and visibility:

I checked my FLHP/FLHTP manual and the smaller fairing mounted speedo on the FLHTP has the same functions and LEDs as my larger FHLP speedo in the console.

I was thinking that I might be able to get the tach next to the smaller speedo in a gauge cluster like this that I believe is from a sportster:

Now, assuming the gauge diameter is the same and the spacing for mounting are also the same as it is on a RK, it seems like I could:

  • Find a take-off speedo
  • Build an extension for the speedo wire harness that would be long enough to reach the new position of the smaller speedo in the 2-up cluster
  • I am guessing the wire plug would be the same on the larger and smaller gauges...anyone know for sure and their wires match?
  • So now I get both gauges in the new 2-up cluster...I think I'd need the dealer to adjust the odometer on the new smaller speedo, right?
Now, what to do with existing console speedo...I was looking a co-workers ride and the console with the popup gas cap appears to be the shape as the consoles used on the RK:

I am thinking that with my console speedo removed that I could put the pop-up lid in the opening where the speedo was and it could possibly be a small storage area.

Assuming that the 2-up gauge cluster shown above would fit, can anyone see any reason why this wouldn't work?

THx!

Sounds like a nice project. my only concern is if the big wiring connector on the back will blend into the headlamp and not stick out like a sore thumb. Post pixs of your progress. Happy modding.

Good luck with the project and share your results.

I really wish that HD or some 3rd party offered a plug-and-play, handlebar-mounted speedo/tach for the Road King.

Something like this:

Being that the headlight cowl is black, the existing wire cluster for my tach is barely noticeable...I am hoping to achieve the same with the speedo wiring. We will see.

Ganged speedos and tachs were also used on the older FXRs. I think I have one laying around somewhere.

I don't think the 2-up gauge cluster is going to be a problem. I did however take a look at Ronnies to compare the console setups and possibly moving the gas cap door to my existing console.

Here is my setup:

And a 2011 FLHTP console with the gas cap:

If I want a functioning cap, I don't think this will happen as it looks like the hinge pin and catch for gas cap lid are built into console... Piece #12 on my console could possibly be modified to have to hold the hinge pin that #'s 16, 8 and 1 connect to but that would be some work. The catch would need to be worked in as well. Does anyone know of an aftermarket part that would work here for what I am trying to do?

I finished up this project project last weekend.

Here are some photos:

Here is a write up of all the steps to get this done.

I agree. That's a very clean job!

I like the speedometer up above "handlebar level", myself -- more in the rider's line of vision...

Nice job, it looks cool and I've never seen anything like that before on a Road King.
