Anyone using the plastic flag mount from Harley that clips to the side of the tour pack? I think it's like $29. If so have you noticed any damage to the tour pack from this mount? Thanks.
I use the plastic one which includes zip ties that attach it to one of the vertical posts on my backrest. Works great, no scratches at all. Gives the flag just a bit of tilt and cants it backwards a bit also. I think it looks great.
Scratched the hell out of my brothers tourpac. The flag would never stay in one place. It would move toward the center causing the scratches. Mine are mounted to the rack.
I have two mounted on mine and also noticed that they have a tendency to move toward the middle of the tour pak. I removed the liner and tied some cord from the flag base to the base of the antennas and they no longer move. Problem solved, but they should have a warning in the instructions.
I may be wrong, but I think the packaging says something about 'parade mode' or 'parade speed'? This to me, means 10-15 MPH. Yes, the plastic clip-on flag mounts can wander at higher ...and possibly scratch the tour pack. Now I fly a flag in front of my house, not on my bike.
I have used a few different plastic mounts including the HD one. Always used only one in the middle and used 3m or duck tape on the outside paint for protection. Never had any damage to the ABS putting them on or taking off. Protect the paint and you won't have scratches even when running higher speeds.
I run one on each of my RK hard saddle bags. My original ones came with the clear plastic tape to cover the paint. I go through a set of the flags about every 8 months or so. I figure the more movement and color make it easier to be seen. If I am taking long trips (> 100 miles) I usally take them off.
Check out thepropad.com They make the mini-beast air horn and have quite a selection of rack mounted flag holders. I had a pair on my air wing tour-pak rack. Best flag mounts there are, in my opinion.
