Wink Personal Cheques (checks)

They are pretty much gone in most of Canada and long gone in Europe already. I bet i haven't written a cheque in 3 years. Debit cards, MC VISA Amex and all with Chip and pin technology make them pretty obsolete. At my Peterbilt Dealer, we haven't accepted personal cheques in over 4 years and company cheques are only accepted if you have an established parts account. When my US grandsons were here this summer, they had never seen debit cards with chip and pin.
Guess its another of the differences between neighbours, along with those extra "u"'s :-)

I wrote one to my dealer for 25K and they just called the bank to make sure there was money in the account to cover it.

When i signed the papers to buy my FLHRC i said i could give the $10,000 down payment with the HD-VISA or they would have to wait a week or two till i sold part of a stock fund .
They said no to the HD-VISA and opted to hold the bike till i brought in a cashers check after i got the cash from the sale of the stocks.
I would have dug all that crhome cash. ha

My dealer took a personal check for purchase price; guess each dealer does their own thing. They did beg me to finance for a few months, but wouldn't make it worth my while......

I went to my local dealer today ( Eagles Nest, Lathrop CA) and bought a $10 dollar fairing bracket and when I went to pay I handed over my Visa card, I was told they needed my thumb print to take credit card, I told the gal to use debit, they don't accept debit, I paid cash. Sad thing is they took my check for 20 grand when I bought my bike there in '08.
This is why I normally drive the extra 20 miles to go to Mitchell's Modesto Harley.

Glad it worked out for you, still think your nuts for taking a personal check, I mean there is no reason for it.

Just tell the guy, look, its Saturday afternoon, Monday you go to the bank, come over with cash the bike will be all cleaned and waiting for you and we will do thew paperwork, cya Monday.

Whats he going to do, not like there are a lot of others out there going to take a 12k personal check on the weekend, he will show up Monday, cash in hand, if not you averted a bad situation.

I've taken large cash for a sale, but if it would have been an "uneasy" feeling or a non-country person, I had my counterfeit pen ready.
I forgot about not paying over 10K cash when I bought mine. I paid 9900 and had one check folded in my wallet, wrote it for 9K and borrowed 8K. I deposited money within the hour, my bike was still 2 weeks away. I tried twice the day before to buy used bikes with cash on the table and got within $500. on a 2009 and a dealer let me leave.

Any cash transaction of 10K or more, is required to be reported to the IRS for investigation.

When I bought my 2011, I showed up at the dealer with my check book to write a $9000 check for the down payment. The finance guy said they couldn't take a personal check, it had to be a certified or cashier's check. So I had to go to my bank and get one then come back to the dealership.

That's only for bank deposit/withdrawals.

Wrong! The $10K cash rule is for purchases also. The original quote was correct. Try buying anything with $10K CASH (when I say cash, I mean green back cash), and it will be reported to the IRS. That's the LAW!
