- under the tank
- under the bags
- on the front caliper
as DesireBagger suggested, seem to to work for folks?
I'm thinking mostly side visibility here, I'll solve the front and rear with other methods. My biggest fear I guess is cagers not seeing me and changing into my lane. I'm pretty good about staying out of blind spots, but some folks.... well. Don't have just "spots".
I plan on doing the whole LED turnsignal/passing lamp/headlight/taillight thing too, but that's a whole pile of cash for right now. Maybe I'll start with some white accent lights and the LED turn signal/brake light setup for now, then add the headlight and passing lamps after my checkbook recovers from that ;-)
When you get it done, PM me, I'm pretty sure I'm just a few miles down the road from you and would like to check them out. Been thinking of adding some myself...
I am looking at adding some LED's to my bike in the near future. I am not going for the bling effect either. Since you are in NC you should check out Custom Dynamics. They have a good selection and if nothing else you could get some good ideas on placement. It is always nice to see someone else who has done something to see if you are going to like it.

Custom Dynamics makes some nice stuff. A little pricey though compared to others.
I have used Joe Florida's stuff on a previous bike.
My current ride has lights from xkglow.com and oznium.com
Some states/ areas are picky about certain color lights. Yellow (amber) would be legal anywhere.
Some places only allow clear/ white lights facing forward.
Here's a couple pics of my current setup. Did it all myself, including led color change in gauges, led's in speaker grills in fairing and bag lids. Added some for the front wheel too which gives a cool color flash as the wheel turns...
I have 6 lights up front, and 7 in the rear, and still have accent lighting to add to the safety factor of the bike. I use white, its the brightest, and no hassles.
Great idea and I really like it. No glitz and glamor like a kids sport bike but practical. I have always thought I could never add those funky looking colored 'look at me' lights but you have me thinking. Thanks!!!! I may stop and check some out on my way home from work.
A couple years back Maryland passed a law called the "motorcycle lighting safety awareness bill". Prior to the bill, alot of folks already had led accent lights. On any weekend night, some local watering holes looked like an amusement park with all the bikes in the lot sporting led accent lighting of every color you could imagaine. The law stated that we could now "legally" ride down the road with them on as long as they were not strobing, or LEO colors (red and blue). Plenty run the blue and red and I have never heard of any LEO hassling anyone about the police colors on their bike.
I own a black 2009 Street Glide and I installed approx 140 or so white led lights from Boogey Lights on the bike. Under the gas tank, behing the horn and breather, under the seat and under the frame. It is a fairly simple install to do. I did this for a couple reasons. I live in the country and there are no street lights. Secondly I ride with the Patriot Guard. Often times on a PGR mission we leave and travel hours in the dark to get there and get home long after dark at night. It was never a "cool" factor with me and I dont always use them when I am local. It was simply the fact it made me feel more secure with the extra visibility going down the road at 65mph in the dark.
The white led accent is bright and really makes the bike stand out when its dark. The ground effect lights wrap the bike in an aura and you look like an alien spaceship going down the road. I figured anything that is going to make me more visible in the dark was a plus.
Now I am about to replace them but going with the 180 light kit from Joe Florida this time. A better price than Boogey Lights and both carry a lifetime warranty. The ones I have now are their "cut and click" exposed 5mm bulbs and a couple bulbs broke over the years. The new ones are weather sealed and alot more flexible for mounting.
I respect everyones choice as to how their bike looks. Some of my friends do not have them, but several do. I am also now in the process of replacing all turn signals to Custom Dynamics led as well as a truck lit phase 7 headlamp. Good luck on your decison and do what feels right for your bike.
I feel alot safer, plus I like the way the blue LEDs look on a blue bike. If I had a black bike I would have done white LEDS. Doing charity rides for cancer stricken kids, I'm around A LOT of County and City Police officers. These very sick children really like the LEDS. If it makes the kids happy, so be it. I may run accross an ******* police officer one day, but if I'm not speeding or showing my ***, they probably have better things to do than chase me down.
So I was at *** HD in Asheboro, NC today picking up the Sporty we got for my wife. Since we were taking home a bike, we got 10% off everything in the store for today only. I got the requisite do-dads for the Sporty, and....
Got the Custom Dynamics turn signal stuff, and the Bright *** Lights LED Tail light. (easy sell with the wife, 10% off, safety related stuff). Hopefully get that batch installed here shortly. I already have the LED windshield trim from HD on the front too.
I have the "always on passing lamp" thing to install yet, and I'm waiting on the run/brake/turn harness for the tourpak to get in.
That should help for now.
Then, I'm leaning towards one the Joe Florida kits. Do white LEDs under the bags, on the frame in the center, and under the tank.
That should make me visible!
