bottoming out to much will rub on the wiring to your tail lights, eventually will bare the wires and cause a short . happened to me on a 09 classic with street glide shocks. beware!

No it doesn't. It sits in this brass looking compressed metel bug nut thingy flush. No screw protrudes from it.

Maybe it's just those soft Metzeler tires committing suicide...I had a buddy run through a set in 3k miles. He "said" he did not abuse them. Dealer told him to take a hike.

You may have something there. Numerous cases of Hara-Kiri have been reported by owners of Japanese tires after they had done something wrong like sliding.

I've had the problem of my tire wearing the rear harness out before but not this issue. Being short and lowering an Ultra can cause problems. Now I have my bike on the first hole instead of the second on my lowering kit. I haven't had an issue since. Luckily the harness was less than $30 and a few beers for my labor.

Question

Jim, I've been doing some custom work to my bike recently and have removed the stock length rear shocks, then jacked the wheel and swingarm up to the fully compressed position, just to check clearances.

I also have an oversize tyre and that gets nowhere near the fender where the tread is. Suggests to me there is something very different about your bike! Are you sure the shocks are not shorter than stock?

Graham, Good Idea, I will try that.
They are the standard air shocks that come with the Electra, looked it up. The pressure was about 12 when I checked, so I pumped them up to 20. Never had a problem solo, only with the wife on the back. It visibly raised up when I added the air...going to put her on this weekend and see what happens. NEVER had this issue with my old shovel. Have had that old girl loaded down and no issues. Read another thread where some of the guys had changed out the air shocks for the regular shocks, and that solved their problems. I might go there if this doesn't work.....or maybe I'll just have a few beers and say F**K IT..!!!

Yeah, I called Metzeler because I wasn't sure if it was the bottoming or there was something wrong with the tire. They told me to take it off, send it to them, wait 3 weeks and they would determine if it was the tire or not...(want to bet on how that will turn out?) Soooo I end up with no bike for about a month or longer about $30 in shipping and have to do a re-mount and end up right where I started. No more Metezlers...(BTW Metzeler is a German Tire). Their warrantee is basically toilet paper. This tire has less than 1000 miles on it.
