I find it is better to ride close to the edge of the road on the side the dog is coming from. That way when I shoot them they don't drop dead in the road and I don't have to stop and throw them off to the side.

As President Lincoln once said, " Better to be thought as a fool than to speak and remove all doubt" Your post ecos his thought precisely.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say there's one sure-fire way to avoid this kind of problem...
KEEP YOUR DOGS OUT OF THE STREET, and you will greatly improve their chances of not getting hit by MOTOR VEHICLES!
The op is in no way at fault, unless he was cruising through the neighbor's backyard. The dog was in the STREET.
Morons.
After review of the facts and hearing from the jury this is my opinion.
I agree with you the owner of the dog is the instigator of this incident. If you love your dog you protect it. If this accident had caused injury or death to the rider or passenger there would be dire consequence for the owner.
The rider is not held harmless. He was aware of a potential danger and did not act accordingly. The dog being a dog is an innocent victim of both parties.
Sad on all counts. the dogs owner was derelict , the rider was irresponsible and the dog is dead. Judgement against the owner. Penalty, death of the third party. Thank good a child was not injured.
The rider made a mistake in judgement, I don't believe it was murder, rather dogslaughter 2nd degree. Lesson learned. Court adjourned.
