I have a SE Heavy Breather and the rain sock does nothing for me. I have been in storms where when I went to accelerate to pass a truck in heavy rain it spit and sputtered and then kicked in. The best thing you can do is as mentioned above to keep the filter clean and well oiled.

Never had an issue running an open element in the heavy rain.

The guys that claim to be running in heavy rain for long periods of time without a problem might not be looking in the right place for a problem.

The place to watch is your oil.
Next time this happens, pull the dipstick and watch for a milky color oil, that's a problem.

I would think if that much water is going through the intake the bike wouldn't even run.

Lol, i love the guys who say you dont need it. Few of my brothers have HD/ness/K&N style open filters and I run the heavy breather.

if you get caught in the rain, im sure you're fine. but if you ride in the rain any kind of distance, you will start choking and sputtering. cant tell you how many times we get caught in the rain on a run, so im not just talking out of my ***

Never had a problem. Bike set out many a nights in pouring rain till 12AM back before I retired. Came out many of times with 3/4" water setting in speedometer. I run an open K&N with just the Willie Skull cover on the front. Drove in downpours at 45 mph. never missed a beat.

in 1977 the super glides had that dumb air cleaner that had the snorkel facing forward and they used to light of oil on the filter element----------bunch of them wasted them selves .

I won't take a chance myself but I am not to smart----------riding in a downpour with suction from the engine is way freaking different than a bike sitting in the rain
