Got in my new National Cycle VStream windshield today. A little upset because they sent me the clear rather than the light tint I ordered so it's going back to swap out, but that's another story. My issue is that this windshield seems to be a little thicker than the wind splitter it's replacing and with my windshield bags it seems I need longer batwing windshield bolts. Can anyone provide a part number or the bolt's dimensions so I can find the proper size bolt in just a longer length? Thanks.
Most dealers have a really nice bolt selection. Take one of your old ones and tell them what you need. They should have exactly what you are looking for. Same torx head and show chrome...
Stock windshield screws are 1/4-20 X 1/2" - Get the 1/4-20 x 3/4" length and it works fine. Chrome buttonhead allens look the best. Many bike shops & auto parts store carry these.
1/4-20 is the correct diameter and pitch. I have a National Cycle shield and the extra thickness is only about .050" or one thread of a 20 pitch thread. The stock bolts work fine for me but I have no windshield bags.
I'm assuming that the winshield bags must also attach in the gap for the windshield. If that's the case I would measure the thickness of the bags, add .050 for the winshield, and get a bolt close to that much longer than stock. Probably somewhere around 9/16" or 5/8" long.
Be careful. If you go too long you'll bottom out and either pull out the brass inserts or f up your inner fairing. I think 3/4" length would probably be too long. Finding bolts in 1/16 or 1/8 inch length increments may be an issue (I'm sure you can get them somewhere but they may not be an in-stock item). If that's the case, get longer ones and cut them to length.
Thanks for all the info everyone; especially the link to depss. I was able to buy 5/8 and 3/4 length 1/4X20 polished allen head bolts for less than $10. Bought both lengths at that price just in case the 5/8 isn't long enough. Pretty sure they will be but didn't think I would find that length. Thanks again all.
I recommended the 3/4" length because thats what I sell with the the Fast Aire Chrome & Black trims. If you add a thicker windshield and a set of windshield bags, it ends up close to the same thickness as the trim.
I have checked the 3/4" w/ washers on my 07 and there are no issues with a stock 1/8" windshield with no bags.
Also, you should always use washers under the windshield screw heads or the screw heads will dig into the painted fairing... it leaves a nasty mark.
