Default Smart Purchasing

Hey,
Getting ready to buy a SG or RG, live in Va. I will just say up front I have been on the losing end too many times when it comes to negotiating a deal on a new car or bike. Trying to do my homework but so far I can not really tell what Harley's are going for when it comes to MSRP. My last bike I bought right at end of year at MSRP with a $1K gift certificate, I was happy with that deal. Right now I am wondering with the slow economy, is it more common to get bikes below MSRP right now? what is the mark up? Any offered smart purchase tactics would be great, thanks.

A smart purchase tactic would be to shop in the last 2 weeks of August when the '14s come out. There will be lots of deals on 13s then.

Just act non-chalant when looking and seem uninterested. Make a salesman work for you. I did that 2 years ago with my Fatboy Lo plus I got 2 dealers involved down in San Antonio. They might work more with you now that winter is coming and prices should drop a bit.

If you can find a left over that you would be interested in, the dealer would more than likely be willing to deal on that. If you are ready to "cut the check", go in and negotiate an OUT THE DOOR price, including EVERYTHING. (bike, prep, taxes, EVERYTHING) You can go in knowing what the MSRP is and what taxes are and therefore know how much the discount would be.

I would think that now would be a good time to look. You should be able to get below MSRP pricing along with with incentives. I bought my 2012 in Feb this year for $1500 less then MSRP. Just don't get married to the bike. Be ready to walk, give your phone number and tell the sales person to call if they want to sell. Make a game of it. It works!

Best time to buy I think is November. Thanksgiving and start of the gift buying season plus the season is over in the north. Advice is to keep your trade separate if you are trading a new bike don't mention it until you agree on the price of the new bike. Don't give them information to work with. You are their to buy a bike not answer what you do for work do you have kids etc. they will use some of that against you. The biggest thing is being able to walk away. Have a go price don't play it right away but when they get close write your info down and walk out and tell them when they have a slow week to call you when you want to sell a bike. I just did that on a 2013 street glide and two dealers called me back. One within minutes one later that day. A third dealer didn't come close. Also I didn't pay freight or set up or the silly dealer fees they try to get us to pay. You can get a bike under msrp you just have to work at it. But there is no way I would have been able to get the deal I got in the spring or even late winter.

There are some dealers that will point to the price in the BOOK and tell you,'That's the number plus tax, dealer prep, title fees and any other fees that they can dream up." And they do dream up some dandys. I say, beat them up, leave them with 2 balck eyes, figure of speech of course. Your money is better for you in your own pocket than in the dealers. Make yourself a list of what type of bike you want, list the add-ons and chromegoodies you desire take that list to a dealer and whoop them down to their bottom dollar, take that number to another shop, hand that number to the salesman and tell him to make you a better offer. Get 3 or 4 dealers involved. Then when you get your best number, ask them for a thousand dollars of store credit for chrome and/or motor clothes. You never know what they will do and the worst that can happen to you is that they ask you to leave. You migh make out like a fat rat. They don't call them STEALERS for nothing.

Oh yea, forgot something. Negotiate the first 3 oil changes for free into the deal.

Thanks for the info everyone. I did a RG build on the HD site. When I am ready I will send the list with everything I want and more to three dealerships and see what happens. Cheers!

For the most part you wont get a response at all unless you show up at the dealership. Some will give you a price but most wont waste their time unless your standing in front of them. So don't be surprised if you get the " Come in and well talk about it" response. Most wont think your serious unless your there in front of them.
