Default rear sprocket problems

today I was looking at my 07 RoadGlide and noticed a metal ring (the same size as the sprocket) hanging down. The belt was 1/3 of the way off. It is right behind the rear sprocket. It looked as if the welds have come loose. Can this be taken off and re welded? Do I need to buy a new rear sprocket? Can it be ridden without that metal ring on it? Any ideas on how much this is going to get in my rear pocket for? Thanks for any help

Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF.

That ring is rivetted on, not welded. It may be possible to refit it, but I replaced mine when it started coming apart. Check your rear wheel alignment, as it suggests the belt has been pulling against that ring to loosen it.

My OEM belts have always walked to the outer ring when moving forward, and towards that inner ring that popped off on you when backing the bike up.

Your belt pushing against that ring and walking 1/3 of the way off suggests bad alignment.

A mistake on a tire changing machine popped my inner ring off 2 years ago. I removed the pulley and re-peened the ring back on. It stayed there for the next 2 years and about 40,000 miles. I finally replaced it when I replaced the drive belt a few weeks back.

I got another pulley on EBay for $65 after checking out HD's price of $189, ( that's for my 2000 FLTRSEI.)

So there are your options, Good Luck!

You may be able to re-stake the pully ring by using a modified punch.
Either the ring was not staked correctly or the belt forced it off.

I just read about a similar issue in the Dyna section. I have never seen this happen in person but it is odd. I'd just buy another stock pulley off ebay.

i guess i can call harley and give them my serial number and they could tell me what size pulley and teeth number. I am a bit mechanically challenged but probably figure it out

66x1 for your rear pulley.

Extosee you can replace your 66 tooth with a 68 tooth sprocket from a 07 Sportser sprocket to
change your gearing

It will lower your gear ratio, make 1st gear into a stump puller, and make 6th gear "almost" usable. 07's were notorious for being geared to high in 6th gear.
