4 ozs. in 900 miles? That translates to less than a quart over the change interval (5,000 miles). I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
Actually it comes out to 22.2 oz. Ride it. Will probably get better with miles but if it doesn't still acceptable for an air cooled engine in my op. if it doesn't get any worse.
Maybe I'm completely off target but from what I've learned about HD's is that they all lose a little oil out the breather. Once it gets a little below full on the dip stick it should stop.
I gotta ask, how do you know it used 4oz? Did you drain it completely?
I agree with the general idea behind your question which to me is how do you accurately measure 4 ozs. of oil in oil pan. While I'm sure you can argue the absolute accuracy, there are ways to do it. No need to drain it completely.
One example I can think of is if you know where the oil is on the stick before, and you fill it to the same level after, and measure the amount you added, you'd have the answer.
