Default What's this plug?

I bought my first HD, a 2001 Road King, in August. I've been enjoying the ride, meeting great people and learning more about the bike.

I haven't been on the bike for over a week and when I went out at lunch today the battery was too weak to crank the bike. I put it on a charger and by the time I got back from lunch it was working fine. So I guess a trickle charger for the garage is my next purchase since the weather here in the Mid-Atlantic is getting too cold for a newbie like me to ride all the time.

When I removed the seat to connect the charger I saw a small plug next to the negative terminal of the battery. It has a cap to protect the connection inside but the inside doesn't look like any trickle charger plug that I've seen before. So I'm stumped as to what it is.

Attached is a picture of the plug in question. Hopefully an eagle eye here can tell me what it's for.

Any ideas?

Default Plug

Just a guess but if there are 4 pins in it, it could be the plug that is controlled off of the ACC Switch on the dash. One pin would be ground, one is the brake light, one 12vdc controlled by the main ignition switch and the other controlled by the ACC switch and goes to +12vdc when the switch is on.

Spend the $60 and get the service manual, it will prove invaluable.

Looks like the service port for diagnostic tools. A race tuner can be connected there as well.

Sorry, I need my eyes checked. I don't know what that is.

Exactly. You use that to connect an accessory of your choice.

Okay, I've had an 01 for quite a while and never even noticed this connector, even though I take the seat of every time I clean the bike. So this can be used for what and where would a person get the matching adapter? HD of course but is there an advantage to this as opposed to connecting all my external stuff to the battery terminals? Thanks OP for pointing this out. Like I often times say, if it were a snake it woulda bit me....

On your bike, its probably forward of the battery compartment, down in the cavity below the tank. Google deutsch 4 position connector DT4, you'll find a bunch of places that sell them. the connector has a ground, ign hot, ACC switched hot, and a brake hot, you can use any combination of them to achieve a desired power supply.

the real question is why did your battery not have any ooomph to start your bike after a week? i've had to leave mine unattended for a month, month and a half, and had no problem firing it up when i got back.....
