Default Battery Charger

So, on all my previous bikes (Non Harleys), there was a pig tail that I just plugged my battery tender into. Which was good because I truly am the least mechanically inclined person on the face of the earth.

Now, I have a 2012 electra Glide with no pig tail. I have a new battery tender which came with a pig tail. Can anyone tell me in words that a layman can understand, how I go about hooking up the battery tender. So far, I have taken the seat off.

Dealers usually put them on at PDI. If they didn't and you have to do your own, seat's off so now you have to take off the torx bolt at the rear of the plastic tray that holds the ECM and pull it up to expose the battery. Then hook up black to negative and red to positive. Then lay the fuse holder on top of the battery so that the plastic carrier can fit back into place and fish the pigtail down through so that it hangs to the right of the bike above the oil filler spout.

Small bit of advice... remove Neg (black) wire first then Pos (red) wire...reattach in reverse order, Pos first then Neg. Dont crank down & over tighten the small bolts.

Note - make sure that you disconnect the negative (BLACK) cable on the battery first then the positive (RED) cable. Then attach the pig tail eyelets in this order Positive (RED) first then the Negative (BLACK) last. What this does is if you should accidentally touch something with your wrench you will not arc out because it is not grounded.

I know I type slow Fast Aire beat me to it.

Thanks Guys. How do you disconnect what I think is the antenna connection from the battery ? The manual just says to release it, but doesn't tell you how. I don't want to break the darn thing.

Are you talking about the ECM, the black module with fins that is snapped into the plastic tray? And by manual do you mean service manual or owner manual?

No. I got that off okay. It's (According to the manual) the HFSM antenna. And it sits on top of the tray and connects to something below the tray. I can't get the tray off with that thing still connected. The manual just says to release it, but doesn't tell you how.

Oh, and I meant owner's manual. They won't sell me a service manual because I would need an IQ a few points above idiot. And I fall short of that level.

Ahh, the security module. The module on the tray should be able to slide off. The bottom of the connector has rails like other connectors and you should be able to slide it to the left or right to release it.

See #2 in the photo below and you can see how the connector would "slide" out
