dyno time
A good dyno takes 3-6 hours.
First, If someone beats the **** out of it on a dyno they don't know what they are doing.
Here is a typical dyno tuning session for us... Tuning starts in the 1250 RPM and 5% throttle. Then 1250 and 7% throttle. Then 1250 and 10%.. and 15% then 20% and 25%. They we move to 1500 RPM and 5% again. Then 7% and then 10% and 15%, 20%, 25%. Then up to 1750 and 5%, 7%, 10%.. and so on. On new bikes this is in kpa or manifold pressure but you get the picture.
Then 2000, 2250, 2500, 2750 and 3000 RPM at 5% and so on until we are hitting 100% throttle. ALL of this hasn't even started to work the engine yet!!... Each one of those RPM's are held for a matter of a few seconds (monitoring the engine at all times). The first time you took a hill at 3000 RPM and wide open throttle (100%) and held it for 30, 40, 50 or more seconds you put the engine through more than we did in the first 3-4 hours of tuning.
Then moving on to 3500, 4000, 4500 the throttle positions start up higher at say 40% then 60% and 80% and 100%. At 5000, 5500 and 6000 its 60%, 80% and 100% throttle position. So 3500 RPM and up goes much faster than the lower RPM ranges and again the sample times are in seconds, not minutes. Ever taken the bike out and held 3500 RPM and up for a minute or more while passing, climbing a hill or just running flat out?
The Dyno doesn't break an engine, if an engine breaks on a dyno it was going to break on the road and potentially be a much more dangerous situation for the rider.
With that said we always ask first if you are having any problems with the engine or noises or any other issues. We don't want a bike on the dyno that is having problems and realistically the owner should not want to put their bike on a dyno if it isn't right. Don't waste a tune on a bike that doesn't run right.
Like I said, running an engine that isn't tuned properly can damage the engine.

Ridiculous statement. I've had 2 bikes and 2 cars dyno'd/dyno tuned. That is ignorant.
