RE: Could not believe my eyes - riding at 30 below!!!
Here's my take.....
If people can hop on a pair of skiis or a snowmobile, and ride through snow drifts in the mountains in freezing temps, why can't someone bundle up enough to withstand a cold wintery ride on his bike?
RE: Could not believe my eyes - riding at 30 below!!!
I bought an 05 Ultra in Colorado Springs this Jan, and rode it 1,100 miles from there to Las Vegas down through the Rockies and across the high country of New Mexico. This was during the severe snow falls in early Jan. The temp never got above 40 and was regularly down around 4 or 5 with a windchill of I-hate-to-think-what! When the skies were dry and the sun was out it was fine. When snow slurries turned to storms, however, it was a different story. At one point I had to abandon the bike on the side of the I-40 just west of Grants, NM.
On my last day of travel, I covered 600 miles in below freezing weather. There were times that I was very cold, but it was an adventure. And besides, a hot shower never felt so good at the end!

An adventure is something you want to have when you're in front of a roaring log fire, and when you're having an adventure, you want to be in front of a roaring log fire!

The one thing that has been over looked is "Black Ice". When it gets this cold out (below zero), bridges and intersection will get a thin layer of ice from the exhaust coming out of cars. Not a good thing when you only have two wheels.Doesn't matter how dry the roadway areif the intersectionis glazed over.

My record for ridding to work in the cold was -14 real temp. No sissy wind chill just a real -14. That was on a dirt bike with no wind shield and no leather. just layer upon layer upon layer. Would I do it again, Maybe if the need arised.
People ride snowmobiles in that temp why not a motorcycle.
