Will the '07 and earlier double row bearings fit the '08 - '13 models?
That's a good question. I believe they are the same OD, but have 1" ID, not 25mm. Wheels from around 2000 to 2007 all take three different sizes of bearing, with 3/4", 1", or 25mm ID, but all having the same OD. The bearing pockets will take the wider double-row bearings., but I don't know if the later wheels will.
The wheels that take the special ABS bearing also take standard OD normal bearings.
Use the HD special bearing for the ABS side and SKF bearings for the rest. I noticed on my 2009 Ultra that the right front bearing dust cover was out and some ***** were gone while filling it up with gas at 40,000 miles. I think I was very lucky since we were heading to the mountains. Had to get a tow to the HD shop in Little Rock, they were great to deal with. Back bearings seem to hold up fine but cheap insurance is to change front bearings with tire change.
Has anyone tried to "sneak" a little grease into the sealed bearings?
I have seen a grease gun extension that looks like a football needle, for example...
I believe Granger carries them for special applications.
Changing bearings each time you change tires is no guarantee you won't have a problem. I had a 85 EG and that's what I was doing. At 66,000+ miles I just had the dealer do the normal tire and bearing change and on my way home the wife pulled up next to me motioning to pull over. I did and she said I was throwing sparks. So around I went back to the dealer and parked out front. Told them it was throwing sparks so they went to check. The bike would not roll. The bearing had welded to the axle. I had got maybe 12 miles away so most of that return was just pure heat being generated. Crazy thing is, the bike never felt strange. This was a rear bearing though. I'm sure if it was the front I would have felt it in the bars. Maybe?
I tried the grease thing and pushed in the seal ant tie wrapped it. What a joke that was. The U haul to Little Rock was a better decision.
I also called my car and bike insurance company and added towing of my bike to each policy.
